🔵 As a lead CC04 Coordinator, Katherine plays a key role in the #APOLLOStudy, which investigates the APOL1 gene 🧬— found almost exclusively in people with African ancestry, including African Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, and Hispanic Blacks — and its impact on #KidneyTransplant outcomes.
Her vision for APOLLO’s impact:

🤝🏽Honoring Barry Freedman, MD, Nephrologist, Principal Investigator, and long-standing leader in the #APOLLOStudy.
🔎 Dr. Freedman’s team co-authored the landmark 2010 Science paper that first linked #APOL1 to #KidneyDdisease in African Americans🧬and later showed its role in earlier transplant failure. His group was selected by NIH to serve as the APOLLO Coordinating Center and co-leads Clinical Center 13 (#CC13), which recruited one of the largest numbers of deceased donor kidney transplant recipients.👏🏽
🫶 For nearly four decades at Wake Forest, Dr. Freedman has pursued the promise he made to patients: to uncover the gene driving kidney disease and develop treatments for future generations. Today, through #APOLLO and as U.S. Lead Physician on the #APPRECIATE clinical trial of an APOL1-targeted therapy, he continues that mission.🏥
