Enzo Maresca was recommended to City director of football Txiki Begiristain by Manuel Pellegrini years ago. Maresca played for Pellegrini at Malaga and worked with him as a coach at West Ham. Begiristain suggested to the City academy that Maresca was somebody who could be U23's coach, and possibly work with and/or replace Guardiola one day. After working as Guardiola's assistant in 2022-23, he has now been announced as his successor. "It's a huge challenge for many reasons," Maresca says. "All the success over the last 10-15 years.
