Knowing that the construction of the #icebreaker was suspended for years after serious deficiencies were discovered in the design documentation, that persistent bow trim visible in all recent photographs keeps bothering me.

Polaris's original design requirement was that the #icebreaker should be capable of operating in all Bothnian Bay ice conditions without becoming immobilized. Having personally participated in the #icebreaking trials, I am confident that #ARC130 fulfills this requirement.

Design contract was awarded to us and @ILS_Oy on 16 April 2013. There was no precedent; #ARC130 was a blank-sheet design.
Shipbuilding contract was signed with Arctech Helsinki Shipyard (today @HelsinkiOy) on 14 February 2014.
#IBPolaris was delivered on 28 September 2016.
#IBPolaris is the most capable #icebreaker operating in the Baltic Sea and, with 19 megawatts split between three #Azipod propulsion units — one in the bow and two in the stern — the most powerful #icebreaking vessel ever to fly the Finnish flag.

During the full-scale #icebreaking trials in 2017, the Finnish #icebreaker Polaris achieved a speed of nearly 13 knots in 72-centimetre (28.3") level ice which had about 20 % higher flexural strength than what was initially specified for #ARC130.

Oh, and you can nicely see the unpainted stainless steel ice belt fitted to all Finnish icebreakers built since the mid-1980s.
@fi_iceservice Since most #icebreakers have... well, interesting seakeeping characteristics, large swaths of open water can be a problem when they have to operate close to the edge of the ice pack.
Only a handful of icebreakers, such as #ARC130 Polaris, are fitted with a roll damping tank.
The Finnish #icebreaker Polaris has been deployed for #icebreaking (presumably) in the Bothnian Bay. The vessel left Helsinki earlier today.

However, assisting ships with a beam of over 32 m and very limited independent ice-going capability in severe ice conditions can be quite challenging for today's Finnish* and Swedish #icebreakers unless they work in pairs.

The Finnish #icebreaker Polaris, which is based on our Aker #ARC130 design, is fitted with built-in mechanical oil recovery system and large storage tanks for recovered oil.
May they never be needed.

Is the Canada planning to build eight new #icebreakers — two heavy and six medium ones — or 24 if you count in the #ARC146 MPVs that are rated as #PolarClass4 icebreakers (same as the Finnish #ARC130 Polaris).
#icebreaker Polaris is heading south, leaving Kontio and Ale to clear what little ice remains in the Bothnian Bay and wrap up the 2022-2023 #icebreaking season.
