Small businesses account for over 97% of #AustralianBusinesses as of June 2025, according to the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (#ASBFEO) / Australian Bureau of Statistics data. At the same time, Australia is moving through a major intergenerational wealth shift. Analysis from KPMG highlights a transition in wealth from hashtag#BabyBoomers to younger generations. And broader economic research estimates around $3.5 trillion will be transferred over the next 20 years.
Organisational culture expert Amanda Rosazza, founder of Imagine8 Consulting, is concerned that a lot of business value does not transfer automatically. “It only transfers if the business can actually be sold, inherited, franchised, or handed over,” Amanda cautions. “The Exit Planning Institute highlights owner-readiness as a major issue. Industry reporting commonly cites that around 70–80 per cent of privately held businesses listed for sale do not successfully sell.
“So, the commercial question is not just ‘how much is the business worth today?’” she posits. “It is ‘can this business run without the owner?’”
