On the ropes even though I’m a huge Punisher fan because I was like maybe I’ll grab it cheaper in MP, looks sick and glad I grabbed it #Asm129

Our story opens up with an insomniac Spider-Man spying some criminals engaged in skullduggery. In an era before video games or cable TV, fighting crooks is just what college students had to do to pass the time!

Spidey and the Punisher part peacefully, but not exactly on good terms. This could be the beginning of a beautiful frenemyship. Meanwhile, the Jackal swears to destroy Spider-Man. We've never heard that one before!

Enough is enough! Webhead finally KOs the Punisher. When Frank wakes up, Spidey points out that there are claw marks on Reiss's body, and he realizes the Jackal did him in, not Spider-Man.

Punisher notices that Reiss, his armorer, is dead and assumes Spider-Man is responsible. A note to any high school kids thinking about enlisting: three years in the Marines will not actually train you to be a match for Spider-Man in hand-to-hand combat.

I'm not much of a Ross Andru fan, but this is a very nice action sequence. After a kick like that, you can bet Spider-Man is CHOCK full of pain!

Later on, the as-yet unnamed Frank Castle watches from the shadows as Spider-Man visits Frank's armorer. I'm sure this will lead to a civil conversation over a good cuppa tea.

How did the Punisher and the Jackal meet? How did the Jackal convince him they should work together? How did they pick their hideout location? Who made that Spider-Man statue? The world may never know, but this partnership is pretty much done.

As Peter is fixing his costume, Harry stands outside the door, sinking ever deeper into madness. It's a shame that comics just don't have these kinds of long-term subplots anymore.

After crashing into an office building, Spider-Man heads back to the rooftop, but Jackal and the Punisher are gone. He does find a firearm that's conveniently labeled with the armorer's address. Before he deals with that, though, he goes home for a spell.

I have to say, I'm with the Jackal on this one. I have no idea why tying a guy up with titanium wire and shooting him is justice but knocking him off a building isn't. Jackal's actions begin to drive a wedge between our villains.

The non-super powered Punisher leans heavily into surprise to try and carry the fight against Spider-Man. Even with that, and even with the Punisher's toys, he can't put up much of a fight against a guy with the proportionate strength of a spider.

The mysterious someone (okay, it's not actually mysterious) aiming at Spider-Man fires a concussive shot at our hero. Fortunately, his spider-sense keeps him alive.

Peter puts on a happy face to deliver some photos to Jameson, but he only wants pictures of the Punisher. As he leaves, someone has Spider-Man in their sights. I have to say, that's a really creepy picture of Peter's fake grin.

In a different part of town, Spider-Man finds some criminals doing crimes. He sees a perfect opportunity for a little light exercise, and also to get some action photos for The Daily Bugle.

Introducing the Punisher, Gerry Conway's most famous creation! Also meet the Jackal, who will be at the center of the clone saga in Spider-Man titles in the 90s. This scene of a statue being destroyed is similar to Iron Man 63, though Iron Man came first.
