@Kiara_Parker_ @3AW693 and his disgraceful behaviour was used as 'cover' by Howard, with Latham's support, to abolish #ATSIC in 2005 after 15 years of operation, representing indigenous people across the nation .. without giving the organisation a chance to reform and recover, just trashed overnight

This #FakeAbo and #Criminal used to run #ATSIC and syphoned off so much cash, that dudded real aboriginal people. He and his son stole $$. The $40bn a year plus the mining royalties needs a Royal Commission because the money is NOT getting to those in need.

#qt Lowitja O'Donahue was the first Chair of ATSIC, from 1990 to 1996 .. #ATSIC was destroyed after 15 years of direct indigenous representation in 2005 when John Howard and Mark Latham voted together for its abolition

@SenatorThorpe The "go for glory" approach left sane voters in a conundrum. If, like #ATSIC, the #Voice turned out to be a practical failure, we'd be stuck with it, entrenched in the Constitution, like an albatross around our necks. Voters never enjoy the proverbial leap in the dark.

This month’s Voice referendum seeks to entrench an advisory body in the Constitution, to avoid political pressure or de-funding (e.g. the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission #ATSIC, founded in 1990, was abolished in 2005 by the conservative Howard government).

@ProfPCDoherty there were 35 #ATSIC Regions that for 15 years elected Councillors to advise Government, with around 1500 support staff .. until destroyed by John Howard, first by radically defunding ATSIC as his first move after the 1996 election, then hammering ATSIC into the ground in 2005

@bmdamiano @TraceyCrsn @BrentHodgson You're outlining why the Voice needs to be in the Constitution, so someone can't just dump it. #Howard had a review/inquiry into #ATSIC and while not perfect it was recommended that he keep it, along came #Latham and Howard was able to dump ATSIC. #VoteYes to the Voice.

@Qldaah in 1989 the Hawke Govt enacted #ATSIC .. the AEC conducted the first election in 1990 and every 5 years after for nearly 15 years, empowering indigenous people with a representative 'advisory body' to build a national 'voice' for future treaty, but Howard put a stop to all that
