On September 1st, many people remember the moment when the first shot was fired for Eritrea's independence. Before the fight for independence began, Eritrea had a long history of peaceful resistance to injustice. After World War II, Eritrea, once an Italian colony, came under British control. During the British administration from 1941 to 1952, Eritrean nationalists created political parties to advocate for independence. Key figures like Ibrahim Sultan, a leader from the Muslim League, and Woldeab Woldemariam, an influential journalist, dedicated themselves to this cause. They formed the Independence Bloc, a coalition of parties fighting for Eritrea's freedom.
In response to their efforts, pro-Ethiopian union groups intimidated and attacked these peaceful advocates. These violent acts demonstrated that Ethiopia and its allies would not tolerate peaceful dialogue and opposition.
In 1952, the United Nations federated Eritrea with Ethiopia, a decision influenced by U.S. interests in the Red Sea region. Over the next ten years, Ethiopia systematically dismantled the federation, closing Eritreaโs parliament, banning its flag, replacing local languages with the official Ethiopian language, Amharic, and ultimately annexing Eritrea as a province in 1962.

The struggle for Eritrea's rightful independence continued over the years, beginning with the ELF in the 1960s and then the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) in 1970.
By the mid-1980s, the EPLF had become one of the most potent and well-organized "guerrilla" army in the world. They were renowned for their military discipline, innovative tactics, and self-reliance, even building their own medical and industrial infrastructure underground to support the war effort. They managed to defeat Ethiopian forces, backed by both superpowers: first the USA and later the Soviet Union.
On May 24, 1991, the EPLF entered the capital city, Asmara, bringing an end to the 30 year war for independence that Hamid Idris Awate bravely started. Following a UN supervised referendum in 1993, 99.8% of Eritreans voted for independence, leading to the official recognition of Eritrea's rightful independence.
