The concept of All Women Police Stations (#AWPS) in India was pioneered by the #AIADMK government under Puratchi Thalaivi Selvi. J #Jayalalithaa. In 1992, during her first term as Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu witnessed the launch of the country’s first AWPS at Thousand Lights, Chennai. This was a historic step, born out of the vision to make women feel safer while approaching the police for sensitive cases such as dowry harassment, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and crimes against children.
Over the years, successive AIADMK governments expanded AWPS across Tamil Nadu, making the state a national leader in women-centric policing. By the mid-2000s, the number of AWPS had already crossed 190, ensuring almost every district had at least one such station. The model later inspired many other states to replicate it.
The AIADMK leadership not only created AWPS but also opened the doors of the police department wider for women officers. Steps taken included:
Large-scale recruitment of women police personnel in various cadres, ensuring their presence in law enforcement was not symbolic but substantial.
Posting women inspectors and officers to head AWPS, thereby giving them leadership roles in handling sensitive cases directly.
Family counselling centres and support units attached to AWPS to address disputes with sensitivity, underlining the government’s focus on a humane approach.
Creating a safe work environment for women officers and increasing their visibility in field duties, traffic regulation, crime investigation, and even commando training in later years.
Through these measures, the AIADMK government showcased its commitment to women’s safety and empowerment, both as citizens seeking justice and as officers serving in uniform. Jayalalithaa often highlighted AWPS as a signature achievement, reflecting her emphasis on women-oriented governance and reforms.
Today, with over 200 AWPS functioning across Tamil Nadu, the foundation laid by the AIADMK continues to be a strong pillar in the state’s policing framework.
As Union government is pushing for atleast one All Women Police Station(WPS) in each district, Tamil Nadu is leading the country with almost 30% of WPS. Also, if you take rural and urban classification, some states don’t even have rural WPS.
On (23.08.2025) W-7 Kelambakkam (AWPS) conducted an awareness program on the benefits and uses of the Kaaval Uthavi App, as well as POCSO Act awareness, for the students of Kandigai Government Higher Secondary School.
