Last week, we participated in the Uganda National Forum for Scaling Investment in Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems (SPIS), organised under the #AcceleratingClimateTechnologyTransition (ACTT) Project and co-hosted by @UNEPC @FAOUganda @UNCDF @mercycorps @GggiUganda and support from the @DKinUganda The forum brought together policymakers, financiers, technology providers, insurers, agribusinesses, and development partners to discuss pathways for scaling climate-smart irrigation solutions for Uganda’s smallholder farmers.👩🏾‍🌾 During the panel discussion on innovative financing models and aggregator partnerships, our Business Development Lead @AttraAtukunda highlighted the important role insurance can play in de-risking the SPIS ecosystem and enabling sustainable scale. Key discussion points included: 🔹 Changing climate patterns are increasingly affecting farmers’ productivity and incomes due to prolonged dry spells and unreliable rainfall. 🔹 Climate shocks not only impact agricultural production, but also farmers’ ability to repay PAYGO solar irrigation equipment financing.💰 🔹 Insurance can serve as a critical risk-sharing and collateral mechanism protecting farmers, financiers, aggregators, and technology providers against climate-related losses.🌾 🔹 Aggregator partnerships remain essential for scaling access to SPIS technologies, improving farmer reach, and strengthening repayment ecosystems. 🔹 Sustainable scale requires integrated solutions that combine climate-smart technologies, blended finance, strong partnerships, and risk transfer mechanisms. 🔹 De-risking climate-smart agriculture investments is key to crowding in private sector financing and accelerating adoption among smallholder farmers.
