1⃣ To prevent harm & provide effective remedy to project-affected people & the environment,
2⃣ To ensure institutional accountability for the financial institution.
Independent #AccountabilityMechanisms should be structured to:
➕ Maximize impartiality, credibility, legitimacy, & independence from the financial institution’s management;
➖ Minimize barriers to accessing the IAM’s complaint process & allow transparent & effective processes.
The report highlights the need for independent #AccountabilityMechanisms to have a 2-fold mandate:
1⃣ To prevent harm & provide effective remedy to project-affected people & the environment,
2⃣ To ensure institutional accountability for the financial institution.
With our co-authors, we intend for the #GoodPolicyPaper to serve as a roadmap for financial institutions setting up new independent #AccountabilityMechanisms, as well as a tool for making existing mechanisms more effective – all in pursuit of better outcomes for communities.
