“I Hope It Is Not Too Late,”
GEN John “BlackJack” Pershing declares, landing in France in June 1917. GEN Pershing then leads the #AmericanExpeditionaryForce #AEF to rescue Europe.
It’s good to recall GEN Pershing’s long ago concern as 🇺🇸/Europe grapple to assist Ukraine in its existential fight for freedom. If Ukraine loses, Europe must know that Russia, will not stop. Moscow will continue and increase attacks against Allies, even conducting an invasion of members of the NATO Alliance.
On 26 June, 1917, the first troop ships of the AEF arrive to France, landing 14,000 🇺🇸infantry soldiers to fight with and for the Allies. For Europe, 🇺🇸troops are a sight for sore eyes. America’s arrival significantly boosts the morale of beleaguered British, French and other Allies. The AEF grows to 2,000,000+ troops in Europe, and is decisive to Allied victory. ~300,000 of 🇺🇸’s troops are Polish-Americans.
Another lesser known deployment of Polish-American forces takes place during this period. In December 2017, ~23,000 Polish-American troops (some Polish-Canadian) deploy to Europe. They have been trained at #CampKosciuszko, Canada, and are determined to help free Europe and Poland, their former homeland. Most are recent 🇵🇱immigrants to America, above the normal conscription age for the 🇺🇸Army. These soldiers voluntarily put their new lives in 🇺🇸 on hold to serve in reborn Poland’s #BlueArmy, forming in France under the command of GEN #JózefHaller.
There is no question that 🇺🇸AEF troops under the command of GEN Pershing turn the tide of WW1 ensuring Allied victory. As well, there is no question that Polish-Americans under GEN Haller, make significant contributions in the final battles of WW1 in France, then, in defending reborn Poland (and Europe) against the Russian Bolshevik onslaught.
Additionally, after WW1, daring 🇺🇸airmen - none of them with Polish roots - form the volunteer #KosciuszkoSquadron and also join the defense of reborn Poland. Their 🇺🇸commander, Captain #MerianCooper, feels that defending 🇵🇱 is a Righteous Cause. Cooper is of course right in his assessment.
From an early age, Cooper’s parents imbue the future 🇺🇸fighter pilot with a deep understanding of how Poles play a crucial role in fighting for 🇺🇸’s Independence. Personalizing this history is COL John Cooper, Merian Cooper’s great grandfather. John Cooper fights alongside 🇵🇱Gen #KazimierzPulaski, the Father of the 🇺🇸Calvary. In 1779, Gen Pulaski falls in combat at the #BattleOfSavannah, and it’s COL John Cooper who stays with him until his final breath. For CPT Merian Cooper, the logic is simple. Gen Pulaski willingly lays down his life for America, and CPT Cooper and his men are ready to do the same for Poland. It’s a debt of honor.
Returning to Gen Pershing’s “hope, that it’s not too late.” It’s still not too late for 🇺🇸/NATO to ensure victory for Ukraine.
This means,
1) Full Allied commitment to Ukraine.
2) Stop letting Russia “off the hook,” as it increases war crimes on Ukraine, and attacks on NATO Allies - ie, Respond to Russian aggression, not just in a defensive manner. If NATO cannot “deter by denial,” (clearly not so far), then it must “deter by punishment.”
3) Reboot European defense. This includes strong #ForwardDefense which Europe signed up to at the NATO Summit 3 years ago!
4) Give Ukraine what it needs to win.
5) America must remain committed to Europe’s defense, and can multiply deterrence effects by permanently assigning 🇺🇸forces to Poland - 🇺🇸/NATO’s pivotal Ally.
6) For Ukraine, USA/Europe are indebted to you for your sacrifice and unflinching determination. It’s time to end the row with Poland over UPA. It’s not just right. Recall Poland is the nation which stands strongest with Ukraine during your darkest hour. It’s Poles who inspire the rest of Europe to grow a backbone to defend Ukraine and it’s Poland, which remains the lifeline of resupply to Ukraine.
