#AgainWithTheSound. Love how dozens of people pass by within a few feet of the person taping this, and the most you hear is the couple cars, and a couple bike chains and people chatting.
Cities: โWe are not Amsterdam! We canโt just change, push back car dominance and create liveable cities for people!"
Paris ๐ซ๐ท: "Wait. Hold my wine ๐ท๐ฅ !"
#AgainWithTheSound. This parent is able to explore the outdoors with their kid. No radio or handheld device to distract the little one from the humdrum of cars whizzing past. Instead, able to carry on a conversation, hear others passing by, and even catch a birdsong or two.
#AgainWithTheSound. Sound *UP*. This is what a parking garage that can hold over 12,000 bikes sounds like with dozens of people cycling through it.
Contrast with a similarly-sized car parking garage (but with space for only a couple hundred cars). The honking, engines, beepingโฆ
#AgainWithTheSound. A rainy day doesn't have to also mean the constant whoosh of tires on wet pavement. It can just mean the sound of raindrops.
#AgainWithTheSound. Now, look, not sure I'm personally that into the idea of the sounds of kids screaming on my street, but I guess I'll take it over the sound of car horns and engines and tires.
Itโs mind blowing how much better streets can be when designed for kids over cars #Barcelona #superblock #streetsforkids #nobrainer #schoolstreets @GlobalStreets

What's not to enjoy about walking in downtown Atlanta?
Remember when this section of Peachtree Street was phase 1 of a shared-space transformation? Until Mayor Dickens pulled the plug on it?
I remember. Now it's a car sewer.
#AgainWithTheSound. Part of the reason people like to be where other people can congregate like this is it's easy to converse and be physically active, and without the noise of engines revving, wheels whirring, and horns honking.
#AgainWithTheSound. Nothing to add - just that it's wild how different things sound when people are walking, biking, and taking the tram, as compared to when they're all driving cars.
#AgainWithTheSound. Chicago lakefront denizens know what Lakeshore Drive typically sounds like versus what it sounded like today during #BikeTheDrive. Care take over more than just the physical space we can see.
#AgainWithTheSound. Kids getting to travel with the sound of other kidsโ voices mixed in with birds singing. (As compared to being ensconced in the back seat of a car and sealed off from the roar of engines just outside the window.)
What a place to grow up. Young people in the Netherlands typically ride the same style of practical bike as their parents - racks, basket, fenders - for using everyday. Kids and teens ride bikes in such great numbers you see them everywhere, anytime, in the heart of any city.
#AgainWithTheSound. This time the opposite of my preferred timeline palette cleanser.
Anyone who lives within 1,000 feet of a freeway knows this sound well. Just a constant, unending stream of engines, horns, and brakes. 24/7.
No birds. No voices. No music. No laughter.
Bostons official Earth Day parade. ๐
#AgainWithTheSound. Not hard to imagine what this street sounds like when it's open to vehicular traffic. But open it just to people walking and biking and... it goes from being a mental drain to being a mental gain.
Cities arenโt loud. Cars and traffic are loud.
#AgainWithTheSound. What do you hear as dozens walk and cycle past?
Birds.
โCities are not loud. Cars are loud.โ

#AgainWithTheSound. Hard to really capture just how much we have sacrificed in order to rebuild our cities around cars, and especially in terms of sound. The constant drone of a nearby freeway or busy road affects the mental and physical health of millions every day.
#AgainWithTheSound. Wouldnโt be possible to hear those birds or the sounds of peopleโs voices if all those traveling through were doing so in gas-powered cars. The space cars take up in our cities includes audible space.
#AgainWithTheSound. A public street does not need to be deafening to be effective. It can work in a way that is human-scaled and enables conversations without shouting.
โA bucket is a useful tool, but at lunch itโs no substitute for a spoon.
Efforts to build cities around cars fail because like buckets, cars are useful tools that canโt serve all needs well.
The pursuit of drive-everywhere cities serves no one wellโnot even drivers.โ -P. Norton
#AgainWithTheSound. Love this from @Jay_Pitter and couldnโt agree more.
Also makes me wonder whose favorite urban sounds are corn horns, engines, and tires on asphalt. Cuz thatโs what most of our cities are designed to sound like.
My favourite urban sounds include:
different languages being spoken, bicycle bells, soulful music emanating from patios & street festivals, birdsong, dogs convening, basketball court buzz, old women haggling in Chinatown & Caribbean food markets and rainfall on rooftops.โจ
#AgainWithTheSound. Safe cycling infrastructure like this is not only physically healthier than sitting behind a steering wheel on a freeway, the quiet allows for contemplation and free-form thought in a way that so much of our currently forms of mobility do not.
#AgainWithTheSound. Was always one of my favorite things about a good snowfall: the quiet that followed.
A *major* component of the serenity of snow days in cities is how quiet it is compared to normal.
