Affirmative Action: Two Black Supreme Court justices came head to head over the issue of race in America. As the Supreme Court voted to strike down affirmative action, the battle between the two Black justices strikes a chord of deep concern. A war of words was waged at the U.S. Supreme Court between Clarence Thomas and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Clarence Thomas is the longest-serving justice. He is a clear beneficiary and longtime critic of affirmative action. Thomas attacked the newest justice, a Black woman — Ketanji Brown Jackson — who is certainly a forceful, vocal proponent of responsible diversification efforts, including affirmative action. Blistering: Today, numerous pages of Thomas’s 58-page concurring opinion were committed to targeting Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Thomas seized the opportunity to lash out with acidic accusations and toxic distortions aimed directly at Justice Jackson. By name, Thomas criticized Jackson 18 times. Thomas attacked Jackson’s perspectives on affirmative action, as well as her motivations. Example: Thomas accused Justice Jackson of perpetuating views that are “irrational” and “cancerous to young minds.” Thomas was on his own in these pointed criticisms and assorted expressions of grievance: No other justice chose to join in his concurring opinion and prolonged attacks.
