Last week, at the 2025 annual meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America #aiascs, I argued that a portrait bust in the Villa Ludovisi in Rome, universally identified as “Marcus Aurelius”, indeed depicts Hadrian’s first heir, Lucius Aelius Caesar, a discovery that I made in the first moments of my first visit to the Villa in 2019. The identification is unusually important, given that there are no more than a half-dozen sculpture portraits of Aelius Caesar that have been published.
