@ONSocialService My experiences with medical transportation costs has been a nightmare.$42.20 does not cover glasses, just like shelter/basic needs amounts are far too low, and indexing #ODSP rates to inflation FAILS to work below the #poverty line!

...When it comes to the Government's #MAiDinCanada assisted #suicide laws, you don't have to go through all that to prove yourself being a Person With Disabilities (#PWD) and they don't tie household members to a #MAiD application either?

"Why are you so concerned about MAiD?"
Because a lack of access to care, failure to provide treatment and support, and discrimination based on age, disability, poverty, or other vulnerabilities can influence a person's request for MAiD and also unconsciously affect the MAiD provider's decision to approve them. Choices are not made in a vacuum.
Because I've been notified of cases that troubled me enough to report.
Because families have described traumatic deaths.
Because MAiD protocols have not always been followed.
Because a man in his 40s was approved for MAiD after a single assessment at a Tim Hortons despite untreated addiction and mental illness.
They're real people who matter.

People with disabilities often face poverty, homelessness, isolation, and barriers to care.

More than 90 disability and mental health organizations from across the country are registering their concerns about the further expansion of Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) law.
The groups are opposed to MAiD access being widened to people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness. They have shared this position in an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Justice Minister and Attorney General Sean Fraser, and Health Minister Marjorie Michel. The letter was copied to the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying (AMAD) comprised of MPs and Senators.
Inclusion Canada is one of the signatories to the letter. People with disabilities and mental illness who face poverty, housing insecurity, social isolation, and barriers to timely health care need help and hope — not MAiD.
Please share this letter with your local Member of Parliament and Senator and urge them not to expand assisted suicide and also repeal the discriminatory Track 2 pathway to MAiD that is only for people with disabilities.

Parliamentarians are recognizing what clinicians, experts, and people with lived experience have warned for years: the assurances that MAiD for mental illness can be implemented safely are not evidence-based.
An indefinite pause to this legislation is important, but Canada must focus on strengthening safeguards, oversight, and transparency in MAiD, and go even further by repealing Track 2.

This news story requires a subscription but we wish to share the essence.
"The heads of psychiatry at 13 Canadian medical schools are calling on the federal government to halt the expansion of assisted dying to people whose sole condition is mental illness.
In a letter addressed to the parliamentary committee that is exploring this issue, the chairs argue that there is no accurate way to determine when a mental disorder is incurable, no way to distinguish between suicidality and a MAID request, and no way to adequately protect vulnerable patients."
Beyond not expanding MAiD any further - the second access point for assisted suicide in Canada should be repealed. Track 2 MAiD discriminates against persons with disabilities who want access to the economic and social supports they need to live a good life.
2,050 people died from it between 2021 and 2024.
Six out of 10 victims were women.
"Michelle Hewitt has spent years raising concerns about. So she never expected to become a widow because of it."
Having a disability should mean that all possible resources to give a life with dignity are offered FIRST, before MAID.

The Special Joint Committee on MAiD has been brought back together. This committee of MPs and Senators will consider whether the government should legalize MAiD for mental illness. It meets for the first time tomorrow (Tuesday) evening.
We urge the committee to start by considering how Canada’s current MAiD law is working. Our infographic shows some clear problems. The data is from Health Canada’s most recent MAiD monitoring report, the 6th annual report:

@merry123459 From personal experiences. I have been offered MAID from frustrated Drs as a treatment option. It is inexcusable how easily it is offered without thought and without documentation of a discussion. If you won’t chart it don’t offer it

I have compiled my interviews based on decades of living with disabilities, repeated homelessness, multiple mental illnesses, invasive addictions, and also new lived experience based advocacy and activism now that I am finally safe after two decades:
LINKTREE: https://t.co/HlvDmfJK0V
- contains all of my interviews with TVO, CTV's W5, CBC, Toronto Star, Al Jazeera, The Walrus, Trillium, Ricochet, The Monitor, Times of London, IJF, Famous Youtubers, and in news articles
- topics include legislated poverty, MAiD coercion for track 2 and mental illness expansion, and the greatly below poverty line and deadly low disability supports in Canada; like PWD in BC, AISH in Alberta or ODSP/OW in Ontario, plus the federal failures of the Canadian Disability Benefit and UNCRPD
- a homemade, nationwide podcast @ThePwdcast which I researched, edited, recorded and published myself which includes amazing guests like a squatting grandmother in BC, a Star Trek actor talking mobility devices and MPP Sarah Jama on accessibility - all of whom share candid and raw stories
- graphic designs, protest art, and parody media covers created to bring general awareness and positive change through eye-catching layouts accompanied with stats and facts that should motivate action from any reader
- vlogs, town halls and panels that I have participated in from the CUPE seminar in Toronto to the premiere panel at Disposable: Life on ODSP and also my guest appearances on the Jann Arden, Handi-Link, and This Time In History podcasts

Until you've sat in a Dr's office, asking for treatment for a disability that does NOT make your death reasonably forseeable and getting #MAiD suggested in return, you don't get to concentrate on Track 1 MAiD when PwD say that Track 2 is legalized social murder.
#AidnotMAiD #CDB
Until you’ve sat beside your mother as a terminal illness slowly takes everything from her, you don’t get to judge this conversation.
During the pandemic, my 88-year-old mom was dying of lung cancer. She was in pain. She was bedridden. She lost her independence, her voice, her dignity piece by piece. Because dementia had already begun, she couldn’t qualify for MAID. She didn’t get the choice.
Being confined to a bed led to severe pressure sores exposing her spine despite care another layer of suffering no family should have to witness.
We had to watch her endure when compassion should have meant options.
MAID is not about “giving up.”
It’s about autonomy.
It’s about safeguards.
It’s about allowing mentally capable adults to decide when enough is enough.
Learn what it actually is before condemning the people who have lived it.
"When the United Nations released a scathing report on Canada’s treatment of disabled people last spring—calling out inadequate financial supports and urging Ottawa to halt the expansion of medical assistance in dying—the federal government was silent.
Nearly a year later, it still is."
This is completely unacceptable. We want action from this government.

@GarnettGenuis Does releasing the Canada Disability Benefit (#CDB) with regulations that IGNORED the LAWFUL LEGISLATIVE GUIDELINES in which they were to be written count as coercion?
Too late for that? Well then

@cassko @KelsiBurns @ClanCollector The problem is that #Track2 #MAiD is being suggested to disabled Canadians whose conditions DO NOT cause death to be reasonably foreseeable.
BY THEIR DOCTORS.
IN A LIST OF TREATMENT OPTIONS.
It happens all the time.
If you think that's "great" you're a ghoul.
#AidnotMAiD
@PierrePoilievre Did you offer the specific suggestion of fixing tbe #CanadaDisabilityBenefit so that it conforms to the purpose of the Act & becomes the program EVERY SINGLE MP VOTED FOR?
No? Big surprise.
#PwD are starving & becoming homeless due to choices made by politicians.
#AidnotMAiD
@PattyHajdu And when are you going going to #FixTheCDB regulations which FAIL to meet the Legislative Guidelines in which they were to be written so workers who become Persons With Disabilities (#PWD) don't end up in LEGISLATED #POVERTY!?
