#AlisonPearson When the media and politicians talk about free speech, they mean for white non-Muslims, not for Muslim and minority communities. For the last 25 years, the British press has been highlighting talks and comments by Muslims and calling for the police or regulatory bodies to take action, and if that does not work, for the government to bring in new laws. The same media has been calling for action against pro-Palestinian comments on placards. Remember the coconut fiasco? They regularly lambast remarks and opinions of others as "hate speech", while spewing stereotypes, and tropes inciting hatred against Muslims and minorities almost daily. The Daily Telegraph has probably been one of the worst offenders if researchers were to analyse its content.
Most mainstream media don't do journalism, they do political propaganda, mainly white nationalist. Much of what is written is pretty poor and what we at Ayaan call "churnalism" i.e. just repeats of press releases or stories from different sources unchecked or critically challenged. It's easy money. The media also do not provide alternative opinions, they actively censor free speech.
Many of the articles on minority communities that pass as opinion pieces in the mainstream media, are just outdated white peoples racist bile, that was once found in school playgrounds when the children of the first generation attended school. It is not reflective of society as a whole but the mainstream media have given racism and anti-Muslim hate a new life. Real journalism and challenge is now freely available on social and alternative media.
Yes the mainstream media can and do incite hate and have been doing it for a long time. The real tragedy is that there is no real independent and robust regulation of the mainstream press.
Journalists can incite hate and have been doing so for a long time, and people should definitely report what they perceive as hate crimes by journalists. We have seen the consequences of not doing so and challenging them and misinformation during the summer riots. In the absence of proper regulation it is important for the public to do so.
If politicians are inciting hate we should also report them too. The law applies to everyone and it is the job of the Police to apply it without fear or favour despite political and media pressure in some cases.
