Today is June 23. When we think of parliaments, we picture modern democracies with massive, expensive buildings. But the absolute oldest surviving parliament in human history was started in the year 930 AD! Known as the "Althing" (Alþingi), it was formed in Iceland. They had no king and no capital city. Instead, chieftains from all across the island gathered once a year in the middle of summer at a massive open-air rock formation called Thingvellir. At this natural gathering place, they recited laws entirely from memory, settled violent blood feuds, and functioned as both a legislature and a supreme court! This incredibly advanced ancient assembly survived centuries of foreign rule and empire takeovers, and mind-blowingly, the Althing still exists today as Iceland's official national parliament!
