#animationthread Minions: The Rise of Gru looks okay, but in a year where we are getting Onward, Soul, and mostly original films, I'm curious to see how this midquel/sequel will do.
#animationthread There are super talented people working at Illumination, I just wish they could or would elevate their writing and stories instead of playing it safe. The fact that Pets 2 was not a financial hit might push Illumination to do better, but we will have to see.
#animationthread Their animation is on point. They do not have cheap animation. The biggest problem I keep seeing with Illumination films are their stories and scripts. They plant interesting ideas, but then don't do anything with them. Or, they don't do enough.
#animationthread Now that this sequel has more dialogue in it with the inclusion of young Gru and a group of villains, it loses that charm, and I'm worried we are going to get right back into what I think drags down most of Illuminations films.
#animationthread A lot of what made the first one kind of work was how for a decent chunk of the runtime, the film went with either no dialogue or very little. It relied on the physical movements and body language to get what the characters were saying across to the audience

#animationthread If anyone is curious, I think it looks okay. Nothing great, but I do feel like the sequel to the first Minions loses a lot of what made the first film sort of interesting and sort of ambitious for an Illumination film. (1/? thread)
