Unlocking The Beauty Of Waterfowl: Nature’s Graceful Swimmers

On the #biology and #broodcare of the #muteswan #Cygnus #olor (#Anseriformes), a #competing species and a special #colormorph.
The mute swan originally was distributed in northern central #Europe, but is now widespread as a #semidomesticated #species and inhabits larger and smaller bodies of water, such as lakes and ponds. In Central Europe, the #monogamous animals prepare to #breed around March and create conspicuously large breeding mounds in the immediate vicinity of the bank. Five - eight #eggs are laid. The chicks flee the nest and increasingly go on further trips from the nest with their parents. The young are fed by their adults.
According to W. Szewczuk & Z. Kasprzykowski (2024) global #climatewarming may be the major reason, why the #whooperswan (Cygnus cygnus) is becoming a competitor of the European mute swan.
The whooper swan, which is actually native to the #subpolar zones of Eurasia and originally only #wintered in central Europe as a #migratory bird, is now showing a tendency to no longer leave its former winter quarters in the form of several subpopulations that are no longer migratory. The ecological conditions have changed so that Central Europe and the neighboring western East Europe are attractive enough to breed successfully even in summer. This means that the whooper swan comes into direct competition with the native mute swan for suitable #breedingareas. It is interesting to emphasize that shifts of distribution areas northwards in order to escape global warming are generally observed frequently among birds. A #southwardshift, on the other hand, is considered a special exception that, in my opinion, is not yet sufficiently understood. However, the authors mentioned above assume that the reasons must be serious enough to avoid the energy-intensive migration.
According to the authors, their studies showed that in regions where both species occur #sympatrically, the whooper swan prefers to breed near forests, while the mute swan prefers open areas. This is interpreted as a displacement of the mute swan from its originally (more diverse) breeding areas towards #oxbowlakes, i.e. standing waters that were originally part of a river. I would like to emphasize that #globalwarming will generally lead to new #speciescompositions, which will change animal behaviors and thus the entire ecological situation.
The mute swan is also confronted with a different #colorvariant in terms of behavior and morphology, which is particularly common in Poland and which is therefore also referred to as the "#Polish variant" . Due to the lack of #melanin, the #immutabilis variant has white dun chicks, which are driven out of their territory earlier by the adult swans, accompanied by increased mortality, but which, on the other hand, reach sexual maturity earlier than the normal color variant.
The author L. Enright (2016) summarizes the literature knowledge about the #twocolormorphs of the mute swan, introduces genetic information and explains a putative #selective advantage of the white morph, namely that it begins to breed earlier and thus will have more offspring during its life, and this way contributes for example to a more successful dispersal of the mute swan of this morph.
The morph distribution in Europe is according to the paper above a kind of separated by a "#geographicalcline" with the "polish" morph being more frequent eastward. They interbreed. But In case this should once be defined as an indeed allopatric distribution (due to maybe the original artificial rearing hotspots for the immutabilis morph- as several authors assume it being a result of artificial breeding) I think it may perhaps under suitable circumstances in future become a case of evolution towards even getting over the species border.
