Observations after #ethcc2024
1. Focus on User Experience Improvement: The emphasis at ETHCC has shifted from merely upgrading infrastructure to creating user-centric applications. This change aims to onboard users by providing genuine engagement and optimizing user acquisition and retention. The community is exploring various methods to enhance the user experience. Notably, we encountered several teams, including Orb Lab, working on chain-abstraction solutions that are nearing market readiness. Additionally, tools designed to make web3 projects more user-friendly and provide better user analysis are in development. It has become clear that previous strategies involving capital or airdrops were somewhat ineffective, as they attracted low-quality users. Despite the ability of point systems to encourage users to invest, the subsequent drop after token launches has had significant negative impacts on protocols. Maintaining performance has thus become a crucial topic, with teams actively developing solutions to support other projects in this regard.
2. Valuation Correction and Fundraising Landscape: Earlier this year, hype surrounding Eigen Layer and Bitcoin ETF approvals caused a surge in crypto prices, prompting many founders to return to the market for fundraising. However, compared to earlier in the year, deals that didn't close their rounds have recently decided to lower their valuations. Many teams that raised funds at higher valuations over the past two years are now returning to the market for their next rounds. These teams face the reality that, despite the passage of time, their traction remains limited, necessitating lower valuations for new funding rounds.
3. Institutional Focus and Dedicated Roles: Institutions are becoming a primary target for many organizations, leading to the creation of roles specifically dedicated to acquiring institutional clients. While community engagement remains essential for generating hype and awareness, institutions provide substantial capital to protocols. Consequently, companies are increasingly hiring or allocating team members to cater specifically to institutional clients.
4. Shift to Long-Term Perspective: Historically, the market has been oriented towards short-term goals, focusing on immediate popularity, token price increases, and quick returns. However, there is a noticeable shift towards a longer-term perspective. The inevitable challenges of building a startup mean that stakeholders who are only interested in short-term incentives tend to part ways quickly. Aligning fundamental goals for long-term success is becoming more important, despite the persistence of short-term pump-and-dump schemes within the industry.
