Worst, Summer (#AprilMay) of 2023 in #Kollywood in a decade!
The #Kollywood summer of 2023, months of April & May has not been very good for film business. There were no true blue-blooded blockbusters, just also-ran hits!
Out of 30 odd Tamil releases in April & May there are only 4 films which made some noise at the box-office - #PonniyinSelvan2, #Viduthalai #Pichaikaaran2 and for return on investment & positive reviews #GoodNight.
#PS2 had a fantastic opening and was critically more appreciated than #PS1, but audiences found it otherwise.
#PS2 is definitely a hit but worldwide theatrical gross will be only 50 to 60% of part one.
Look at 2022 summer months of April & May releases - #RRR (released last week of March), #Beast (Apr 13) #KGF2 (Apr 14) #KaathuvaakulaRenduKaathal (Apr 28) #Don (May 13) & #Vikram (June 3). It was best summer season post-covid for theatres and the trade. In fact theatres had a dream run, highest footfalls and canteen (concessions) sale in a decade!
In contrast single screens and multiplexes say this year footfalls and canteen sales are hardly 50 percent of previous year! And adding to their woes cost of running a theatre increased by over 35 percent as government hiked electricity rates.
What are the reasons that caused the decline of footfalls?
First and foremost content did not live up to expectations. Added to that absence of big tentpole superstar driven mass entertainers this summer. The big heroes and their producers summer release planning and strategy misfired.
The market was flooded with small and medium films, which audiences avoided. Today however good a small or medium film is, the audiences will not come to theatres as they know they can watch it on OTT platforms or on satellite channels within a month !
Theatres in Tamil Nadu want a 56 days or 8 weeks for medium and small films and 90 days or 3 months window for biggies between theatrical & OTT release to be implemented at the earliest.
And pricing of concessions especially in multiplexes went through the roof! Today’s audiences come to theatres not only to watch movie but also for popcorn 🍿 cola and assorted snacks! In most theatres food combo rates are higher than ticket price! Plus parking charges in mall multiplexes are unreasonable. All these are reasons for decline in footfalls in theatres!
This summer booking apps reported decline in online ticket sales compared to last year. Now audiences realise that you can walk in even on a holiday buy a ticket and seating of your choice and save on booking charges!
Another major factor that captured the imagination of the youth in 2023 summer was #IPL2023. This year all #CSK matches at Chepauk were sold out and tickets were grabbed in the black at astronomical rates! And most matches in rural areas attracted huge youth audiences on giant television screens put up by #IPL sponsors & associates.
Let us hope summer box-office of 2024 especially prime time months of April & May will rock. END
