Ans. The office of the #ComptrollerandAuditorGeneralofIndia (CAG) can be traced back to early days of British rule in India. In 1773, #RegulatingAct established office of Auditor General of Bengal, who was responsible for auditing accounts of #EastIndiaCompany. In 1858, after Indian Rebellion, Crown took over direct control of India and office of Auditor General of Bengal was renamed the Auditor General of India.
💥Roles and responsibilities
👉CAG is supreme audit institution of India and is responsible for auditing accounts of Union and state governments, as well as those of autonomous bodies and corporations substantially financed by the government.
👉CAG's duties and powers are prescribed by #ConstitutionofIndia and Comptroller and Auditor General (Duties, Powers and Conditions of Service) Act, 1971.
