Here, Hiroshige has skilfully depicted the chilly silence of a winter afternoon, using unprinted white space to evoke snow.

This is one of several surviving statuettes showing men carrying a ram. Most are shepherds & this figure bears a remarkable resemblance to the Good Shepherd familiar in Christian art.

The scene depicted on this Japanese fan is from the Makura no sΕshi (Pillow Book), a diary written by lady-in-waiting Sei ShΕnagon in the late 10th century describing her time at court.

A 19th-century winter coat for day 19 of #AshmoleanAdvent. Woven from the fleece of Himalayan mountain goats, Kashmir shawls were famous for their lightness, softness and warmth, and were a luxury product traded from India to Europe.

Day 17 of #AshmoleanAdvent β Illuminated Music. Created for the Christmas Vespers and part of a bound Medieval manuscript volume, it was made by an anonymous French artist around 1290. It features a Nativity scene within the large, capital R.
