Good mernin and happy Sunday to my early risers, night owls, insomniacs, neurospicy besties, and other carbon based life forms. ☀️🥵 All aboard the Swamp Ass Train! #SweatyBayou #Assilicious Today is another hot one with plenty of sunshine, and we’re only beginning the warm up. Highs climb well into the 90s for many of us, with triple digits making another appearance across parts of the Western Slope and southeastern Colorado. Monday and Tuesday still look like the hottest days of this #LeGagMe heat. Translation: we’re rapidly approaching DEFCON 1 on the Gooch Lagoon Scale. When I tell you that Gold Bond is saving me, I speak nothing but facts. I am a fact factory. Factory of facts. LOL Anyhoodles, a few isolated heat based showers and thunderstorms will bubble up this afternoon and evening, mainly over the mountains and nearby foothills. Coverage will be pretty limited, and most of us won’t see much, if any, rainfall. If you happen to get caught under a stormy storm, don’t expect a drought buster. These little sparky booms will be much better at producing lightning and gusty blowy outflow winds than meaningful rain. A lucky few might pick up a quick shower, but most storms will be stingy with the moisture. Unfortunately, that brings us to the fire weather concerns. We’re heading into another critical stretch across the region. The recipe hasn’t changed much: hot temperatures, historically dry fuels, low humidity, and occasional breezy to windy conditions. Existing fires will likely become more active over the next several days. If you notice more smoke this week, that doesn’t automatically mean firefighters are losing containment. Fires naturally become more active under hot, dry weather, and the containment lines crews have worked so hard to build will be tested. Air quality may fluctuate from day to day depending on fire behavior and where the wind decides to send the smoke. Drink your water. Your kidneys called. They’d like to keep their jobs. 🤣 Please don’t do anything that could remotely throw a spark. The Fourth of July has packed up its lawn chair and gone home. Seriously though, this is one of those weeks where every one of us can make a difference. One careless decision isn’t worth putting firefighters, homes, or entire communities at risk. I’ve watched neighbors rally around each other during wildfire season time and time again, and I have every reason to believe we’ll continue doing exactly that. Yes, El Niño is here. No, weather patterns don’t flip like a light switch. The atmosphere takes time to respond. The longer term weather pattern sees signals that monsoonal moisture will slowly begin working its way back toward the Four Corners late this upcoming week, with a better opportunity for scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms heading into next weekend and possibly beyond. If that trend holds, temperatures should ease back a few degrees and our rain chances will gradually improve. As always, the drama is in the details. I’ll keep you updated every mernin and nowcast throughout the day whenever Mother Nature decides to get a little spicy. I've started writing a book about tornadoes and hurricanes.
