This moth (Chetone sp.) fooled me into thinking it's a Heliconius butterfly! These butterflies are (often) toxic and many species mimic them to deter predators - nature's version of adversarial examples for the ML algorithms. #AutomatedMonitoringOfInsects

This Copiopteryx moth also came to our lights. Recent research has shown that those "tails" actually confuse the echolocation of bats, keeping the moth safe as it flies! #AutomatedMonitoringOfInsects

Many of the moths here are spectacular. Here is an Automeris silk moth with two defenses - if it folds its wings, it disappears like a dead leaf, but if that fails, then it opens its wings and becomes a big scary face. #AutomatedMonitoringOfInsects

The AMI camera trap in action! Top right is an imperial moth (Eacles sp.) which is about as large as my hand. The moths are constantly moving and there are a hundred others circling around and recirculating, so each minute the picture is different. #AutomatedMonitoringOfInsects

Setting up automated camera traps in Panama with a UV light to attract insects. These AMI systems were designed by @UK_CEH based on the original design by @TokeHoye, Kim Bjerge, and team. Kudos to @AlbaGomezSegura for trap wizardry in the field! #AutomatedMonitoringOfInsects

Hi from the rainforest in Panama! For the next week, we will be here testing our AI-enabled camera traps for automated monitoring of insects. Stay tuned for updates on machine learning, moths, and other cool things from Barro Colorado! #AutomatedMonitoringOfInsects
