The small 🇺🇸 #AirForce #USAF #AviationDetachment #AVDET assigned to Poland 🇵🇱 has been an incredible “force-multiplier” in integrating the USAF with Poland’s AirForce #PLAF. The USAF AVDET is the first permanently assigned 🇺🇸 military unit to Poland/NATO’s #EasternFront. This started in 2012 — thanks to the USAF for the forethought!
Much more permanent forward presence is needed. Here’s a good start:
(1) permanent presence of the ENTIRE “europe-focused,” 🇺🇸V “Victory” Corps HQ to Poland (not just a portion as is today with the rest in Kentucky);
(2) return of two 🇺🇸 heavy divisions to Europe - one assigned to Poland, and one to Romania;
(3) NATO must upgrade its 8 #EasternFront BattleGroups to brigade size, with robust logistics and enabling units in support;
(4) 🇺🇸 F35 wing permanently assigned to 🇵🇱, Leading Western-allied/CEE squadrons across the EasternFront;
(5) NATO must upgrade maritime capabilities including from 2 to 5 #SNMGs and 2 to 5 #SNMCMGs to ensure robust NATO presence/patrol coverage from the Arctic, Atlantic, to Baltic/Black and Mediterranean Seas (weak maritime posture invited Russian aggression in the Black Sea area).
Putin’s rise, has been marked by Russia’s increasingly more aggressive behavior against NATO Allies/Partners. There have been discussions about the wisdom (or not) of assigning permanent 🇺🇸/Western NATO forces to Poland and along NATO’s EasternFront.
During the #ColdWar NATO’s #ForwardDefense played a crucial role in successfully deterring, then defeating SovietRussia, by being ready to truly defend against SovietRussia. We did not defend NATO’s Frontline from the French coast, rather we were postured with hundreds of thousands of troops “toe-to-toe” with the Soviets, with West Germany as the allied anchor point.
Poland and Romania are ready and willing to serve as NATO’s EasternFront anchor points today.
We do not need an exact repeat of NATO’s posture during the ColdWar, but we do need credible and substantial forces forward. Serious ForwardDefense thinking has been overlooked, or dismissed as “passé “ since Russia invaded Georgia in 2008. Since then, we have “reacted only,” with limited forward presence, and mostly continue episodic unit rotations and/or “trip-wire” formations. This leaves vulnerable EasternFront allies/partners exposed to Russian aggression. This has led to failed deterrence in 2008, 2014, and 2022. So why would you keep doing the same thing?
NATO’s current forward posture remains ad hoc and therefore incoherent. It misses enormous opportunities to deepen allied integration and interoperability. If we want to ultimately reduce 🇺🇸/Western presence in Central/East Europe (CEE) - Ie, the EasternFront, then we must surge permanent presence forward for several years to foster and increase CEE/European defensive capabilities now, and develop them for the future. Like it, or not 🇺🇸 leads NATO, and must lead this effort. Willing CEE allies are committed to forward defense and are spending the massive requisite funding to deter and defend. They need 🇺🇸/Western allies on board with the same commitment.
Rebalancing/pivoting to China does not mean 🇺🇸 must “cut and run” from Europe. Whatever we do to make Europe more capable against Russia, is not a detractor to our readiness elsewhere, rather, it increases our readiness to defend in the #IndoPacific/globally.
NATO was organized to prevent War in Europe. It has failed - though no NATO ally has been attacked, War has still returned to Europe against NATO partner nations. 🇺🇸/NATO must ensure the current War ends with Ukraine as victor, and that another war does not start. That means 🇺🇸/NATO’s strong commitment both to Ukraine’s victory and to ForwardDefense.

7/11 🇫🇮 can sponsor 🇵🇱 into the recently established Nordic AirForces initiative which includes Norway, Denmark, Sweden and 🇫🇮 (3 are F35 nations). The USAF Aviation Detachment #AVDET - based in 🇵🇱 - could support this larger regional effort, by “internationalizing” the AVDET.
