2,500 #Sudanese refugees head to registration point after nearly 100 days in forest
Around 2,500 Sudanese refugees in #Ethiopia's #Awlala forest have decided to leave on Thursday, heading for the refugee registration point on the Ethiopian-Sudanese border. This decision comes after 98 days in the forest, according to a statement from their Coordination Committee.
The refugees have faced significant challenges during their time in the forest. The committee reported that three people died from gunfire and two children from malnutrition in a two-week period. Additionally, there were 11 miscarriages and 23 gunfire injuries. These difficulties have led to a decrease in the refugee population from 6,080 to 2,411.
The Coordination Committee has requested assistance from international organizations, including the United Nations and the High Commissioner for Refugees, to provide protection during their journey. Meanwhile, UNHCR and Ethiopian authorities have been working to relocate refugees to other areas, though some have declined relocation due to safety concerns in the proposed camps.

Two #Sudanese refugees die in #Ethiopia attack
Two Sudanese refugees died and ten others were injured during an incident on Saturday evening in the #Awlala forests of Ethiopia's #Amhara region, where refugees have been holding a protest since early May.
An anonymous source from the Awlala camp reported that armed individuals attacked the refugees. One person died immediately, while another, identified as the spouse of the first victim, succumbed to injuries later. Ten other refugees were wounded, some seriously.
The incident occurred shortly after representatives from the Ethiopian Refugee and Returnees Commission visited the area.
This event follows recent security challenges in the region. On 17 July, an attack near the nearby #Kumer refugee camp resulted in the deaths of nine Ethiopian security personnel.
In response to security concerns, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (#UNHCR) has been working to relocate refugees. In May, approximately 1,000 Sudanese refugees left the Kumer and Awlala sites due to safety issues and inadequate services. The UNHCR is currently moving refugees to a new settlement near Assosa in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.

Continuous looting, such as the recent theft of six tents by armed militias, adds to their suffering. Additionally, threats of diseases like cholera loom over the refugees.
