Space exploration is all about thinking outside of the box. Often when working on the edge of technology the most practical tool doesn't exist, so the best option is to repurpose equipment from another industry. The #AxEMU testing treadmill is an example of this. A standard treadmill could not handle the bulk, weight, and restricted movement of a pressurized spacesuit, so we utilize a customized equine treadmill (built to handle a racehorse). It was an unexpected but simple and effective solution.

Single-suit configuration is the goal for the #AxEMU, meaning it only requires a few modification to perform a spacewalk in low Earth orbit or on the Moon. Training astronauts with a single suit design eliminates potential mistakes during a spacewalk, but this presents a challenge because spacewalk requirements differ significantly. The two environments require different mobility, protection, and thermal performance from the same pressure garment and life-support system. The #AxEMU design is built around one shared architecture that can absorb those differences without forcing crews to relearn the suit.

The #AxEMU offers more mobility than Apollo-era spacesuits, so astronauts can kneel and work closer to the ground. A suit that can kneel is only useful if the tools in hand are ready for the same work. Apollo tools were sized and shaped for a stiffer suit and a different pattern of heat and cold. That is why Axiom is redesigning the tools and equipment astronauts will need to work and collect samples at the lunar south pole.

It's exciting to see the #AxEMU getting closer to in-orbit testing. The suit is currently on track for an in-flight demonstration in 2027, potentially aboard the International Space Station or during the Artemis III mission.

President John F. Kennedy declared at Rice University 64 years ago that we were going to the Moon. Today, we're going back, supporting new science and technology to benefit humanity, protected by the next-generation spacesuit, the #AxEMU. @astro_reid visited Axiom Space recently to talk to the team making the suit! Go #Artemis and #TeamAxiom!
The #AxEMU was on stage today as @POTUS awarded the @NASAArtemis II crew the Congressional Space Medal of Honor at @NASAJohnson. Axiom Space is proud to be suiting up astronauts for America's return to the Moon.

A visit 252,756 miles in the making. @NASAArtemis II Commander @astro_reid stopped by Axiom Space's facilities to meet the #AxEMU development team. Our next-gen spacesuit will protect astronauts and enable discovery on the lunar surface.

Safety has been an important focal point of the #AxEMU development. Legacy suits have had issues in the past with water leaking into the helmet during a spacewalk. The EMU's water-cooling loop can leak into the ventilation/breathing air if the filters or water separators fail. In the microgravity environment, this water can migrate to the helmet — a very dangerous situation. @Axiom_Space is addressing this problem by redesigning the cooling loops to separate water and air loops and applying advanced diagnostics to catch any issue at a very early stage.

Training for geological exploration of the Moon starts underwater.🌙
For the first time in the @NASAArtemis program, two @NASA exploration geologists and Artemis science officers suited up together for a lunar training development session in NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory @NASAJohnson. Side by side, they tested our prototype geology tools and deployed a mock lunar payload under low-angle lighting, mirroring the extreme environment of the lunar South Pole.
Training like this is helping pave the way for Artemis IV, the mission that will return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time in more than 50 years.

One cool feature of the #AxEMU suit is the addition of a nutrition system. Spacewalks are long and exhausting and until now the only option available to an astronaut was water. Axiom has partnered with GU Energy to create an in-suit food system that leverages high-performance, easily consumable products astronauts can use to replenish energy without breaking seal or losing focus. It will be a welcome upgrade!

NASA and Axiom Space demonstrated #AxEMU - the new lunar space suit for #ArtemisIII. 🇮🇹Prada helped design the inner part of the suit, regulating the body temps with active cooling/heating system. Weight increased to 136kg, but also increased flexibility and movement freedom 1/2

Happy 250th Birthday, America! We are building essential space infrastructure to ensure U.S. leadership in low-Earth orbit, paving the way for breakthroughs that benefit our planet. We take pride in developing the #AxEMU spacesuit that will feature the American flag, marking our nation's return to the Moon after more than 50 years.

The #AxEMU represents a major evolution in NASA’s approach to spacesuit development. While NASA has long partnered with industry for suit design and manufacturing, the xEVAS program marks the first time NASA is procuring lunar EVA services from a commercial provider under a service-based model. Leveraging lessons learned from legacy spacesuits, Axiom Space will incorporate new technology to deliver a suit with enhanced safety and reliability.

@NASA Congratulations to the newly announced @NASAArtemis III crew! We are proud to work alongside NASA to deliver the lunar spacesuit for humanity's return to the Moon. Go #Artemis! #AxEMU
Current spacesuits on the International Space Station require significant maintenance time. Many parts are not easily accessible, which makes servicing them riskier. The new #AxEMU suits feature a rear hatch entry design, cutting down the risk of damage or losing tiny screws and washers during maintenance. It will also make servicing them much faster and simpler, further reducing potential errors.

🇮🇹🇺🇸 Italy-US innovation for space exploration.
@Axiom_Space and @Prada have teamed up for the #AxEMU spacesuit astronauts will use on the surface of the Moon, and for the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), the innermost layer of the suit.
NASA’s next Moon mission is making headlines, and tomorrow this spacesuit could be everywhere. The future of lunar exploration starts with the suit that will walk on the Moon. 🌕🚀
