Gaztec guys "The Role and Importance of Portals in @aztecnetwork Ecosystem" Portals are essential in the Aztec network because they make communication between L1 and L2 possible without compromising privacy. Since Aztec is built as a privacy-focused blockchain, it cannot use the standard, open communication methods that other L2 solutions rely on. Portals solve this by acting as controlled gateways that allow information to pass securely between layers, ensuring that users can still interact with Ethereum (L1) while keeping their private data hidden. Another key reason portals are important is that they enable interoperability between public and private systems. Through portals, public smart contracts on L1 can send messages to private contracts on L2, and vice versa. This means developers can build applications that combine the transparency of Ethereum with the confidentiality of Aztec for example, private DeFi protocols that still connect to public markets or assets on Ethereum. Without portals, Aztec’s L2 would be isolated from L1, limiting its usefulness and adoption. Finally, portals are vital for maintaining system efficiency and trust. By managing how messages are passed between layers, they ensure that both L1 and L2 remain consistent and synchronized.
