AN 🇦🇺⚽️ GENERATIONAL HUMBLING FOR THE AGES
This match will arguably - & perhaps - be remembered as the #AustraliaCup Final (if not domestic 🇦🇺⚽️ match) of the century.
The narrative leading into the cup final was both well known & completely organic, & it meant an astonishing situation of at least 50% & perhaps up to 60%-70% of the crowd supporting @SMFC, with the mighty 🔵⚪️ organised fan base, the Clarendon Corner transforming into the Clarendon Corner Wall for an evening, & outdoing the North Terrace both in organisation, colour, consistent chanting, creativity, & most telling of all, passion for their club!
My opinion is the match’s narrative was further compounded during the lead up which saw #BBEV (#McVictory) show great ⚽️ naivety in playing down the final, refusing to reference South Melbourne’s name in social media posts, an approach which perhaps highlighted their #MCFRANCHISE🍟 manufactured DNA. Instead of building it up as one of the biggest matches & moments in 🇦🇺⚽️ history (which it now unanimously is), their naivety & arrogance to “protect their patch” culminated with their captain Davidson suddenly feeling the weight of the world, & in front of his own #MCFRANCHISE🍟 support, missing a PK he never looked like scoring to hand 🇦🇺⚽️’s most historic club, a deserved triumph & arguably, the most iconic moment in 🇦🇺⚽️ history! 🤯💥
I remember thinking that as Davidson was about to take his PK that it was as if it dawned upon him that this was one of the biggest & most important matches & moments he would ever play in, akin to taking a decisive World Cup PK, but by then it was too late, facing arguably 🇦🇺⚽️’s best GK & PK shot stopper Javi Lopez, Davidson looked doomed to miss & set up to fail by the mental mismatch naivety created his #MCFRANCHISE🍟 employers.
The “just another game” approach/framing likely manufactured & debated in an a corporate office for sign off, grossly underplayed the enormity of the occasion, & when unleashed into the Lions’ den, both Sawyer & Davidson became collateral damage.
It was as if the 🇦🇺⚽️ gods decided a generational moment, lesson & learning was fitting, & in the end, they delivered a generational humbling of the magnitude we have arguably never seen - & will perhaps never see again - in domestic 🇦🇺⚽️.
On the pitch it was an interesting tactical battle made harder by a crowd which would’ve made general play difficult, particularly on-field communication, however, @SMFC settled surprisingly well.
I thought to myself throughout & post-match that every player contributed their best & more for the mighty 🔵⚪️, including the likes of Eliopoulos who was outstanding in the first half, however, his caution saw him sacrificed for the second 45.
#BBEV (#McVictory) relied early on an intensive press (Nduka is elite in this aspect) & were perhaps hoping to catch @SMFC in behind. This approach allowed the mighty 🔵⚪️ to settle well, getting plenty of the ball, with Uchida, Juach & Yoo always a threat.
In the 2nd half #BBEV (#McVictory) brought on Genreau & May (not sure how it’s allowed to sign close to the best player in 🇦🇺 to debut in a cup final), & these two players markedly improved the #MCFRANCHISE🍟’s ball retention, decisiveness & threat in build-up play & attack.
As the match wore on it became clear that South didn’t have any player overawed by the occasion & a few (Lopez, Jankovic, Lampard, Painter-Andrews, Uchida, Giannakopoulos, Juach) who had risen to the occasion in a manner departing South coach Cohadzic could only have dreamt of, a manner also aided by the moving support of the thousands of mighty 🔵⚪️ army fans around the 🏟️ , & a Clarendon Corner Wall, which reminded the players & 🇦🇺⚽️ the historic & legendary players that came before them. A truly iconic moment…

In my observation, what James & the fellow @SMFC organised supporters achieved is unprecedented in 🇦🇺⚽️!
On the night, compared to the heaving Clarendon Corner Wall 🤩, the #BBEV (#McVictory) organised #MCFRANCHISE🍟 CUSTOMERS appeared to be inspired by the concept of “a display home balcony”.
My understanding is a core group of mighty 🔵⚪️ supporters raised >$7,000 in a short period of time to make this presentation a reality, & there’s apparently more to come! Wow! 🤯

After witnessing such a historic moment for @SMFC & 🇦🇺⚽️, & what I felt amounts to a generational humbling for #BBEV (#McVictory), it’s going to take a long time to get over this achievement.

DECISION ANALYSIS ✏️
@AndyBrennan36 shifts the ball sharply inside the box completely wrong footing the BBEV defender (Bozinovski) who reacts very late, cutting across Brennan & getting nowhere near the ball while completely impeding his path & sending him to the ground.
In fact Bozinovski is so late & nowhere near the ball that Brennan effectively hurdles his thigh!
IMO, it’s a stonewall penalty, (one of those where at least 95/100 say “penalty” as their first reaction), & one where everybody in the 🏟️ including the commentator expected a penalty & yellow card, yet somehow the referee cautions Brennan for diving/simulation! 🤯
The matched finished 3-3. At the time of the penalty shout South was leading 0-1 (this decision likely would’ve have iced the match, assuming South score).
I also can’t recall the last time @SMFC won a match with this referee officiating, if you know the answer please post it below.
