@BCPLibraries @vikki4mdnp #BCPBookChat - think my favourite Hardy is The Return of The Native as there is less misery than some of his works. Not sure if anyone could 'enjoy' the Mayor of Casterbridge!!!
@BCPLibraries Classic literature that seems far from modern life is hard! You have to be a historian, an anthropologist and sometimes get your teeth into linguistics. Hard work! Iโve just finished Belinda by Maria Edgeworth, worth it but itโs taken 6 months! #BCPBookChat
@BCPLibraries I loved Tess of the DโUrbervilles - possibly because of its local links ... but found other Hardy novels more difficult #BCPBookChat
@BCPLibraries My old English teacher taught that it was a purely subjective selection process. I now disagree, for me a classic must still resonate through a moral or emotion etc. There needs to be something worth sharing, on some level a gift, passed down #BCPBookChat
@BCPLibraries Dracula was one of the first "classic" books I read, I'd just started helping out in our schools library and found the classics section with leather bindings and a comfy chair. Makes me always want to re-read during stormy times. #BCPBookChat
@BCPLibraries Q6 #BCPBookChat I think if there are contemporary sources describing how people felt about their lives it can give us some clues but our imagination will never match someone else's reality.
@BCPLibraries Hello again! #BCPBookChat
@BCPLibraries #BCPBookchat Q6 think they can be uplifting as they can show characters surviving and overcoming pain and weakness. Also thinking that 1950's children's books sometimes featured characters in quarantine.
@BCPLibraries #BCPBookChat Q4. Miss Havisham in 'Great Expectations' I think Dickens understood that she suffered from a mental health conditions but the terminology was very different. For example 'bad nerves' might describe what we would now call stress, anxiety or PTSD.
@BCPLibraries Q5. I just found this old piece of art I did inspired by Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. It was my interpretation of Marianne. #BCPBookChat #MyBookLife
@BCPLibraries Q4 #BCPBookChat #MyBookLife I do occasionally participate in one but I can't talk about it, it's one I inherited. I think the appeal is escaping into a shared culture that feels less humdrum than daily life.
@BCPLibraries Q3 #BCPBookChat #MyBookLife Juliet Naked by Nick Hornby - inspired by rock music fandom.
@BCPLibraries Q1. For me it's the handmaid's tale. Their are differences between the book and the novel, but the series captures the core messages of the books and brings them into the 21st century. #BCPBookChat #MyBookLife
@BCPLibraries Q1 #BCPBookchat #MyBookLife - my favourites include Bladerunner, The Last Kingdom, Hornblower, film of Little Dorrit.
@BCPLibraries Q7 #BCPBookchat #MyBookLife Narnia, Earthsea, Box of Delights, Joan Aiken's alternative histories, all children's books - perhaps adult ones are too scary!
@BCPLibraries My favourite has to be #Narnia! Had a big influence on me growing up and reading books about it taught me quite a bit about philosophy, like Plato! #MyBookLife #BCPBookChat

@BCPLibraries Q7 #BCPBookChat #MyBookLife will have to say the obvious answer Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson because they have been depicted in so many forms and become part of our culture.
@BCPLibraries Miss Silver by Patricia Wentworth. Has all of Miss Marple's good qualities (all-seeing eye, kindness and knitting) without the nosiness which I wouldn't like to encounter irl. Miss Marple is runner up #MyBookLife #BCPBookChat
