Needless to say the #BRC13 team firmly enjoyed their heard-earned dinner after the last count day of the season. Now back in our home countries, many of us are already dreaming of what 2022 will bring. First up will be the third and final count of our pilot spring count series!
With fewer raptors on the wing, our kick-ass #BRC13 counters also had some more time to marvel at each of the passing birds through the excellent optics provided to us by @SwarovskiOptik. These top-notch scopes make months of sky-gazing a lot more bearable on the eyes.
As we have written before, the historic high counts at #BRC13 were partly due to exceptionally strong atmospheric funnelling of medium and large soaring birds. On Aug 25th thick cloud cover pushed the 1st big streams of raptors over the count stations:

The Honey Buzzards are pushing through! πππToday at #BRC13 some 35.000 of these quintessential migrants were counted as they passed close to the coast under heavy cloud cover. The first real 'Batumi day' of the season, with hopefully many more of those to come.
A few days ago the #BRC13 count ended on a season total over 1.4 million raptors! A historic count by our awesome volunteers, made possible with support of @_OSME and @SwarovskiOptik and thanks to our incredible host families in Georgia. Didi madloba to everyone involved!
Earlier this week we were too early to call the all-time autumn recordπ. After correcting for double counts btwn our 2 stations and a historic increase in daily count effort the #BRC13 team officially beat the 2014 record today (Oct 11), with a total of 1,387,700 raptors.πͺπ₯
And among all the eagles there were again 4 Griffon Vultures today. While 4 Griffons is what we might usually expect to see over an entire autumn season, this year the #BRC13 counters already picked up an impressive 20 individuals in the eagle-streams. (πΈ: @barthoekstra)
With so many eagles on the move, the #BRC13 counters were treated to some spectacular sightings, such of this adult Steppe Eagle which cast a shadow over on station two today. What ... a ... bird! π(πΈ: @barthoekstra)
The highlight of today's eagle fest must have been the Greater Spotted Eagles (Clanga clanga). The #BRC13 team was able to identify no less than 204 GSE among the ca. 1300 large eagles. For context: autumn totals for identified GSE vary from 160 to 426 birds (πΈ: @barthoekstra)
After another epic eagle day the #BRC13 team now has 14,700+ βlarge eaglesβ (Lesser Spotted, Greater Spotted, Imperial and Steppe Eagles) on the season counter, which is ~3000 more than our previous best autumn total, with still 10 days of counting to go! (πΈ: @barthoekstra)
Besides the eagles we will also remember the @Global_birding Big Day for bringing good number of Hen Harriers. The #BRC13 volunteers logged 14 Hen Harriers, incl this juv male, on Saturday. Year totals for the species vary from 6-41 to already 64 this year! (πΈ: @barthoekstra)

Eagles generally dominated the @Global_birding Big Day at #BRC13, with very good numbers of species like Imperial Eagle and Steppe Eagle. This juvenile Steppe Eagle gave a particular nice fly-by. (πΈ: Filiep T'Jollyn)

A long awaited species for @BatumiRaptors, and yesterday the #BRC13 team finally added the 38th diurnal raptor to our species list: a Lammergeier!
It was seen from the Shuamta count station, on a day with 3 Griffons and an impressive 24 Imperial Eagles.

At @BatumiRaptors we do not systematically count small falcons and Accipiter species. But that does not stop our counters from enjoying these gorgeous little raptors. Common Kestrels (left) have been passing the #BRC13 stations by the 100s over the past days.

Along with the massive Steppe Buzzard flight have come good numbers of Clanga and Aquila eagles. The rarest among them is the Imperial Eagle, of which we typically see a few dozen per year. This juvenile gave particularly good views to the #BRC13 team (πΈ: Filiep T'jollyn)
The ongoing Steppe Buzzard passage at #BRC13 is the 2nd largest we have ever seen. As in other peak years the big nrs are linked wt a late passage. Persistent rains caused SB (and large eagles) to 'pile up' for days. When the sky cleared, the river of raptors started flowing.
There seems to be no end to the migration spectacle @BatumiRaptors this year. Thanks to a massive Steppe Buzzard flight over the past week the #BRC13 team has already counted 30.000 more raptors than the autumn record of 2014. With 2 more weeks to go, could we get to 1.5 million?
