Far-Left Extremism Enabled Right-Wing Victories
The backlash to radical energy, migration, and security policies in Europe, North America, and Latin America isn't irrational
Political experts and the mainstream media say far-right politicians worldwide are stoking irrational fears and ancient hatreds to win elections. Across Europe, voters triggered a political earthquake by increasing the representation of right-wing populists in the European parliament. In the United States, Donald Trump is tied with President Joe Biden. And in Latin America, right-wing populists have seized power in Argentina and El Salvador and have, respectively, imposed radical cuts in government spending and detained 76,000 alleged gang members.
But voters in those nations are expressing legitimate concerns, not illegitimate grievances. In the US, voters are legitimately concerned by the huge influx of migrants since Biden took office. In Argentina and El Salvador, voters were responding, respectively, to hyperinflation and the highest murder rate in the world. And in Europe, voters are understandably rattled by the higher rates of crime and failure to assimilate foreign-born migrants, as well as sharply higher energy prices.
It’s true that governments aren’t entirely responsible for those problems. The increased flow of migrants to the US is partly due to deteriorating economic and political conditions in poor nations. The problems in Argentina and El Salvador stem from a lack of economic development. And European leaders aren’t responsible for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or the desire of people in the Middle East and Africa to seek a better life in Europe.
But in every case, government policies have played a key role in public dissatisfaction. Upon taking office, Biden implemented a de facto open border policy. In Argentina and El Salvador, left-wing governments had, respectively, spent far beyond their means and invested too little in law and order. And European leaders had, in recent years, shut down low-cost nuclear and fossil fuel power plants and opened their borders to far more migrants than their nations could reasonably absorb.
While governments in Russia, the Middle East, and Africa are ultimately responsible for the invasion of Ukraine, political repression, and poverty, it’s also the case that Western nations have contributed to their destabilization. Political scientist John Mearsheimer has convincingly shown how the US, Europe, and NATO provoked Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which put in motion a series of events contributing to Europe’s energy crisis. Some analysts reasonably believe that a NATO nation, likely with US participation, blew up the Nordstream pipeline, which brought cheap natural gas from Russia to Europe. The US supported the Arab Spring revolutions, which resulted in even more authoritarian governments across the Middle East.
And supranational organizations, including the United Nations, International Energy Agency, EU, and World Bank, have promoted a Malthusian low-energy agenda to poor and developing nations, rather than the high-energy one required for industrialization, over the last 30 years. And it is that “degrowth” agenda, along with poor governance, that is ultimately responsible for low economic growth and development levels in the nations that send desperate migrants to rich nations.
Rather than take responsibility for the problems they created, governments demonized their political enemies and blamed the public for not accepting such radical policies. In the US, Biden and the Democrats declared Trump’s stricter border enforcement policies to be cruel and suggested that anyone who supported them was racist. In Argentina and El Salvador, former governments claimed to do all they could to reduce inflation and crime. And in Europe, mainstream politicians labeled critics of their policies on migration and energy as racists and climate deniers.
As such, to the extent that populist politicians are pursuing an extremist far-right agenda, it’s made possible by establishment politicians pursuing an extremist far-left agenda. Voters would not be demanding the deportation of illegal immigrants in the US, and illegal and legal immigrants in Europe, had governments not imported so many of them so quickly. Argentina’s president would not have had to impose such radical spending cuts had spending not increased so radically. And El Salvador’s president would not have had to implement preventative detention had the prior government prevented violent gangs from taking over large parts of the country.
The real question is not why voters are turning toward far-right leaders but rather why establishment leaders have been implementing far-left policies.
A big part of the reason is that establishment politicians and political parties have become increasingly dependent on far-left supporters like George Soros, who is the top donor to Biden, Democrats, and Europe’s governing elite. In the late 1990s, Soros’ senior program officer on immigration told me he favored a close-to-open-borders policy. Over the subsequent 25 years, Democratic politicians, progressive NGOs, and news media organizations funded by Soros increasingly embraced that radical agenda.
A similar dynamic occurred in energy policies. Today’s ostensibly mainstream climate and energy policies are all based on an extremist pro-scarcity agenda created by Malthusian intellectuals and philanthropists after World War II. Over time, this Malthusian agenda took over mainstream environmental organizations like the Sierra Club and eventually the Democratic Party and European social democratic parties.
By the time that the Green Party joined the governing national coalition in Germany in 2021, it was powerful enough to shut down that nation’s nuclear power plants, even though doing so was politically unpopular and contributed to a spike in energy prices. Today, Germans spend 40% more on energy than in 2021 and 41% more than the European average...
