▶️ Perched precariously on a cliff’s edge, the Balancing Rock of Digby, Nova Scotia, defies logic and time, standing tall against the relentless tides of St. Mary’s Bay.
How does this 9-meter basalt column endure?
Formation Story
Over 200 million years ago, during the breakup of Pangea, volcanic activity along Nova Scotia’s North Mountain formed vast basalt lava flows.
As these cooled
they fractured into vertical polygonal columns, including the iconic Balancing Rock on Long Island.
Centuries of wind, waves
and tidal erosion sculpted this column, eroding softer surrounding rock while leaving the resilient basalt standing, balanced on a narrow base, seemingly defying gravity.
Geological Information
The Balancing Rock, a columnar basalt formation, is part of the Jurassic North Mountain Basalt, a volcanic ridge extending along Digby Neck and Long Island.
This hard, dense rock
composed primarily of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene, formed from rapidly cooling lava, creating hexagonal columns typical of basalt formations worldwide, like the Giant’s Causeway.
The rock
approximately 9 meters tall and weighing over 20 tons, is anchored by a small contact point, with two narrow sections connecting it to the bedrock, allowing it to withstand erosion and even historical attempts by fishermen to topple it with boat.
The surrounding cliffs
shaped by the Bay of Fundy’s extreme tides, reveal similar collapsed columns, highlighting the relentless erosional forces at work.
