The involvement of researchers in the 2014 "Exploring Ancient China's Links to Africa" meetup highlighted the presence of Chinese ceramics in the Shawan highlands, suggesting that Barara was integrated into the "Silk Road of the Sea" long before Portuguese Jesuits arrived. This multidisciplinary effort—from heritage labs in Oxford to remote sensing centers in Addis Ababa—is essential to finally unlocking the full narrative of this long-lost African capital.
The destruction of Barara in 1531 by Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim al-Ghazi (Ahmad Gragn) marked the end of its era.
