STANDING FIRM IN FRATERNITY: A GOODWILL MESSAGE BY MRS. OYINKANSOLA BADEJO-OKUSANYA, SAN, FCIArb (UK) AT THE EGBE AMOFIN O’ODUA NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2026 ​Distinguished Elders of Egbe Amofin Òòdùa, Learned Silks, Members of the Bench, My Noble Colleagues, ​I greet you all with the utmost respect. It is always a homecoming to gather here in Ile-Ife the cradle of our people, for the 2026 National Conference of our great association. ​I congratulate the leadership and the organizing committee on choosing a theme that strikes at the heart of our current reality: “Advancing Constitutional Democracy, Accountability and Responsible Governance: The Role of Law.” ​As lawyers of Yoruba extraction, our history is built on courage, independent thought, and fairness. We are an institution of immense tradition, but tradition only retains its prestige when it is anchored on justice and equity. ​My presence here today is intentional. It transcends politics, temporary contests, or differing interests. It is a statement of my enduring respect for our shared heritage, our elders, and the values that belong to all of us within Egbe Amofin Òòdùa. ​True regional or professional fraternity is not measured by forced uniformity, nor is it preserved by sidelining others. Its real test lies in how we manage disagreement. Leadership does not mean the absence of a contest; it requires fairness, inclusion, and mutual respect for all members, regardless of gender or conviction. ​That is the standard I choose to uphold. I remain entirely committed to an inclusive, progressive, and unified Bar, one where every voice has a right to be heard and every legitimate aspiration is given a fair field. We owe that example not just to ourselves, but to the younger lawyers who are watching how we conduct the business of leadership. ​I wish us all fruitful, honest deliberations. It was a truly heartwarming experience for me to attend the Iftar hosted by the Abuja Branch of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN) yesterday. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to join our Muslim colleagues in the breaking of fast during this sacred season of reflection and devotion. Moments like this remind us that beyond the courtroom and the practice of law, the Bar is a family bound by shared values of respect, unity, and fellowship. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time interacting with senior lawyers, colleagues, and young members of the profession who brought such warmth and vibrant energy to the gathering. The evening was truly electrifying and filled with meaningful conversations, laughter, and a strong sense of camaraderie. I commend MULAN Abuja for fostering such a beautiful platform that strengthens the bonds within our profession while celebrating our diversity. Dear colleagues, The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) released Notice No. 5 announcing the names of aspirants who have submitted their Letters of Expression of Interest for the 2026 NBA National Elections. I am honoured to be among those who have formally indicated interest in contesting for the office of President of the Nigerian Bar Association. For me, this step is not merely about an election. It is about service to a profession that has given me so much. Over the years, my journey at the Bar has been shaped by mentorship, collaboration, and the shared commitment of colleagues across branches who continue to inspire my belief that our Association can achieve even greater heights. It is important to clarify that the submission of a Letter of Expression of Interest represents only the first stage of the electoral process. As the ECNBA has noted, the formal nomination of candidates will follow in accordance with the provisions of the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended in 2025) and the approved election timetable. In the coming weeks and months, I look forward to engaging colleagues across the country in meaningful conversations about the future of our Bar. Together, we must continue to build an Association that is inclusive, progressive, and responsive to the needs of every lawyer. The Bar has always been my constituency, and I remain committed to listening, learning, and sharing ideas with colleagues as this process unfolds.
