I'm looking forward to learning more over the course of the year and finding ways to build bridges over various chasms of ideology and identity that bitterly divide us at this time. #BeProhuman

"Human beings are complicated. We don't fit into easy buckets, and we're full of contradictions. We also hate to be misunderstood or oversimplified."
It takes courage to embrace complexity. 💙#BeProHuman #BeFAIR @abraverway @braverangels @TrustingNews https://t.co/5WUk8Bd9Z2
Edward Coles is a name worth remembering. He freed his slaves and implored Thomas Jefferson to leverage his own fame to lead a movement for emancipation. His courage and civility exemplify what it means to #BeProhuman. Another powerful #JulyFourth reflection from Prohuman Foundation advisor @LexiOHudson.

Musician, author, and Race Reconciliator Dr. Daryl Davis is the 2024 recipient of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Spirit of Courage National Leadership Award for his successful efforts in combating racism and antisemitism. Renowned for engaging with and being the impetus for over 200 Ku Klux Klan members and other White supremacists to renounce their racist ideology, Davis emphasized the power of conversation in his acceptance speech. "To me, the most powerful weapon that we have against anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination is also the least expensive.
It’s free and yet it remains the most underused. It's conversation. A missed opportunity for dialogue, is a missed opportunity for conflict resolution." As a race relations expert Davis has been doing this work for over 40 years and even went to Vienna, Austria in the 1980s and had dinner with Simon Wiesenthal to gain insight and advice. Davis praised the Simon Wiesenthal Center for standing up not just against antisemitism but against racism and other forms of bigotry and prejudice. He encourages people who want to make a difference and see a positive change, to donate to the @simonwiesenthal
An historic first happened during the Spirit of Courage Awards Gala. The man who introduced Davis was Jeff Schoep who led the NSM (National Socialist Movement), the largest neo-Nazi organization in the United States for 25 years. Schoep met Davis while he was still the leader of the NSM and credits Davis and his conversational method for being a main reason for his renouncing his past. Today, Schoep works for the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) with the very people he once stood against. Daryl Davis and the SWC have proven they don't just talk the talk; they truly walk the walk and demonstrated to all in attendance that change can happen at Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“For change to happen, you must recognize the similarities, even with people who hate you. It is all part of the conversation and bridge I hope to build.” @RealDarylDavis 🐐💙 #BeProHuman
This is Imperial Wizard Billy Snuffer of the Rebel Brigade Knights. I met with him a few times before this picture was taken. But on this day he was attending a court hearing for a fellow Klan member. As we were talking in front of the court house a crowd was drawing near that came in protest of that Klan member.
A woman in particular starts yelling: “Get the f**k out of Charlottesville,” “You’re a person of color. Why the hell are you talking to them?” she asks.
I reply: “That’s right, I am a person of color, But I’m also an American and so is this man right here.”
For change to happen, you must recognize the similarities, even with people who hate you. It is all part of the conversation and bridge I hope to build. I know Snuffer will not change overnight. And I know some people may not be ready to see a black man trying to make sense of what the Klan has to say.
Driving home that night my cell phone rings. It’s the Imperial Wizard calling to make sure I got home safely.
A caring call. Perhaps the seed was sprouting. That is how change begins.

Great piece by @ManuMeel_ on why philanthropists & universities "should uplift and support student bridge builders."
