🎂 #AnneSavage was born on this day 126 years ago. The renowned artist and educator was a founding member of the Montreal-based #BeaverHallGroup (1921–24). “The Plough” celebrates the fertile Canadian landscape and the human ability to domesticate it.
In this quintessential Montreal winter scene, #BeaverHallGroup member #MabelLockerby (1882–1976) captures the heartwarming, familiar sight of neighbours helping each other shovel the snow after a storm. Lockerby is best known for her richly coloured landscapes and portraits.
On this day in 1921, the #BeaverHallGroup's first exhibition opened. In "Self-Portrait" (c.1929), founding member #LiliasTorranceNewton (1896–1980) depicts herself as a confident young woman and artist, challenging dominant perceptions of artmaking as a masculine profession.
