Goodbye #chile I’ll be back, great #beet150 #studytour Met some fantastic people along the way who are #proud of their agricultural industry and what is produces. Fertile volcanic soil, double the solar radiation of the UK and plentiful water (for now) = yield @LetsTalkCrops

@UkDrip @norfolk_hill @KWSUKLtd @JimScarratt It’s mostly centre pivots (at least what we’ve seen), some rain guns and booms. Where we have seen drip it seems to be on higher value crops, such as fruit or vines. #beet150

And then we saw some over-sized fat hen! Or quinoa. Hernan uses a @garfordrobocrop inter-row cultivator to help with weed control. #beet150

#potatoes next on #beet150 #chile #studytour. Only 2nd crop of #potatoes in this field, 1/4 rotation averaging 70 t/ha Spud crops can be ground 12 months as don’t store. Crop lifted when the market requires, only 3% losses grading out after 1 year in the ground @LetsTalkCrops

#beet150 #chile 2nd farm visit, host was disappointed with 120 t/ha #sugarbeet average last year! This crop drilled 20th September, only took 40-50 days to meet across the row. Volcanic soil 8-10% OM, 60% silt. @LetsTalkCrops @Bayer4CropsUK

Our first #Beet150 visit today was to do the IANSA beet factory near Chillan, Chile around 500km south of Santiago. Here’s some of what we learned!
