Bert Jones was one of the most naturally gifted quarterbacks of the 1970s — a passer with Hall of Fame–level talent whose physical tools often drew comparisons to John Elway years later.
Nicknamed “The Ruston Rifle,” Jones possessed a powerful arm and the courage to attack tight windows downfield. With the Baltimore Colts, he played fearless football in an era when quarterbacks absorbed punishment that would draw flags today.
His peak came in 1976, when Jones delivered one of the defining seasons of the decade — leading the league in passer rating and earning NFL MVP honors while carrying Baltimore to the playoffs.
Injuries ultimately shortened what looked like a Hall of Fame trajectory, leaving Bert Jones as one of the great “what ifs” in NFL history. But for a brief stretch in the mid-1970s, few quarterbacks possessed a more dangerous combination of arm strength, toughness, and command.
