#BeyondScience 10 Cancer Symptoms Women Shouldn't Ignore 🚩
Cancer symptoms can often be subtle and mistaken for less serious health issues. However, early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Here are ten symptoms that women should never overlook:
⚖️ Unexplained Weight Loss
Sudden and unexplained weight loss could be a sign of various cancers, including stomach, pancreas, and esophagus. If you're losing weight without trying, it's time to consult a doctor.
😫 Persistent Fatigue
Feeling constantly tired, even after adequate rest, might indicate leukemia or lymphoma. Chronic fatigue that doesn't improve with rest is a red flag.
🙆♀️ Changes in the Breast
While lumps are the most well-known sign, other changes like dimpling, nipple discharge, or skin discoloration can also signal breast cancer. Don't ignore these signs even if a lump isn't present.
🩸Unusual Bleeding
Any unexpected bleeding, such as between periods, postmenopausal bleeding, or blood in the urine or stool, should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. These could be symptoms of cancers like cervical, uterine, or colon cancer.
🙊 Difficulty Swallowing
If swallowing becomes painful or difficult and persists for more than a few weeks, it could indicate throat, stomach, or esophageal cancer.
🟤 Skin Changes
New moles, changes in existing moles, or any skin discoloration that doesn’t heal can be a sign of skin cancer, including melanoma. Keep an eye out for asymmetry, border irregularity, color changes, diameter, and evolving characteristics (ABCDE rule).
🤯 Chronic Headaches
Frequent headaches, especially if they are severe and not typical for you, could indicate brain cancer. It’s essential to consult a doctor if you experience persistent headaches.
😷 Persistent Cough or Hoarseness
A cough that doesn’t go away or hoarseness lasting more than a few weeks might signal lung, throat, or thyroid cancer. Even if you don’t smoke, these symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.
🚽 Bathroom Habit Changes
Persistent bloating, especially when accompanied by pelvic pain, changes in bowel habits, or feeling full quickly, can be a sign of ovarian cancer.might indicate cancer.
🩹 Excessive Bruising
Easy or unexplained bruising, particularly on areas like the hands or fingers, could indicate leukemia. This occurs because leukemia affects the blood's ability to clot properly.
These symptoms may be caused by conditions other than cancer, but it's always better to be safe. Stay proactive: regular screenings and knowing your body are essential. Consult a healthcare professional if you notice any of these symptoms. Early action can make all the difference.

Over the past 50 years, we've seen tremendous progress in cancer treatment. From precise surgeries to tailored radiation therapies and effective combination treatments, the strides made in oncology have significantly increased survival rates. But what's next in the fight against cancer?
🚀 Accelerating Drug Discovery
The pace of cancer drug discovery is rapidly increasing, bringing us closer to the goal of eliminating cancer as a deadly disease. Targeted therapies are at the forefront, with drugs like ONC201 showing promise in clinical trials. Discovered by Dr. Wafik El-Deiry, ONC201 targets specific cancer cell features, offering hope for treating solid and blood tumors.
🛡 Tomorrow’s Immunotherapies
Immunotherapy, which harnesses the body's immune system to combat cancer, is another exciting area of advancement. CAR-T therapy, for example, modifies T-cells to attack malignant cells. Ongoing trials targeting the MUC1 protein show potential for treating multiple cancer types.
🌟 Beyond Immunotherapy
It's essential to explore diverse treatment approaches beyond immunotherapy, ensuring continuous investments in prevention and alternative treatments. The future of cancer treatment is bright, with numerous clinical trials and innovative options on the horizon.
🔍 Overcoming Challenges
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Understanding why some immunotherapies fail due to factors like genetics and tumor mutations is crucial for developing more effective treatments.
Stay informed about the latest developments in cancer treatment and support research initiatives that bring us closer to a cancer-free world.
Join us in the fight against cancer by staying informed and supporting research. Together, we can make a difference.

#BeyondScience Understanding Cancer Staging and the TNM System
Inspired by Hyunsoo Joshua No and Trudy Wu for TED
Navigating a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and confusing, especially when trying to understand what the stage number means. To help demystify this process, we've created a carousel that breaks down how doctors determine cancer stages using the TNM system.
Explore the carousel to learn more about what each stage represents and how advances in treatment and genetic testing are continually refining cancer staging. These medical advancements are improving patient outcomes and providing hope for a brighter future.
20 Million Diagnoses Annually
Each year, about 20 million people worldwide receive a cancer diagnosis. One of the first pieces of information they receive is their cancer stage, typically a number from 1 to 4.
What Do Cancer Stages Mean?
To decode cancer stages, we need to understand the three variables: T, N, and M, which describe the tumor's size, presence in lymph nodes, and metastasis.
The "T" in TNM
The T designation, ranging from 1 to 4, generally reflects tumor size. Criteria vary by cancer type; a 5cm tumor is T3 in oral cancers but T2 in breast cancers.
The "N" in TNM
N staging evaluates lymph node involvement. Cancer cells can spread via the lymphatic system, with higher stages indicating more extensive spread.
The "M" in TNM
M staging assesses metastasis. Traditionally a simple "yes" or "no," it's now seen as a continuum, considering the number and nature of metastatic tumors.
Combining TNM
Different TNM combinations correlate to different overall stages, defining treatment difficulty. This classification is specific to each cancer type. For instance, T3N1M0 in breast cancer is stage 3 with an 85% survival rate, but in pancreatic cancer, it's stage 2 with only a 15% survival rate.
Advances in Staging
The staging system evolves. A stage 4 throat tumor in 2017 might be considered stage 1 in 2018 due to better understanding and treatment responses. Advances in genetic testing and treatments are refining staging and improving outcomes, offering better treatments and greater hope. While many face the reality of cancer, ongoing medical advancements provide more effective treatments and a brighter outlook for patients and their families.
We hope this information helps you or your loved ones better understand cancer staging and the strides being made in cancer treatment. Together, we can face this challenge with knowledge, strength, and optimism.
