In Day 9 of #biojamcamp, teens visited @Stanford! They enjoyed the dining hall, touring campus, and staying overnight in a dorm.
In Day 8 of #BioJamCamp, teens learned about Mesoamerican chinampas (a type of #aquaponics) and #hydroponics. Led by @l3fty112 and Melissa Ortiz, teens made their own tabletop versions to share and teach! Curriculum developed by @Xinampa_Bio. ๐ฑ๐๐
In Day 7 of #biojamcamp, @l3fty112 and Melissa Ortiz led teens to @SalinasLuggers garden in #NatividadCreekPark (#Salinas) to learn about gardening ๐ฝ, composting ๐, and the power of worms ๐ชฑ! (We also used @TeamFoldscope #foldscope!)
In Day 7 of #biojamcamp, teens visited the Johnson Canyon Landfill (@svswa) to learn about local waste streams and sustainability.
In day 6 of #biojamcamp, Melissa Ortiz asked teens to reflect on their identity, culture, and relationship with land through a cyanotype (sun print ๐) self-portrait activity. ๐ผ๏ธ
In day 6 of #biojamcamp, @l3fty112 led teens to make biocircuits using foraged plants ๐ฑ from Gabilan Creek and @makeymakey to play tiny pianos ๐นand tetris!
#biojamcamp teens collected #soil samples from ag fields, parks, and gardens throughout the #Salinas valley for analysis at day 4 of camp! Many shared stories about what soil means to them culturally, for their families, and their livelihoods in #agriculture ๐๐ฅฌ
In #biojamcamp day 4, teens made #cyanotype ๐ prints with ๐ฑ materials from nearby Gabilan Creek to reflect on the intersection between #NaturalHistory, #chemistry, and #art. This activity was led by Melissa Ortiz and @page_goddard. ๐๐พ
One teen, who is an English language learner, summarized the article by drawing a tree ๐ณ, describing the diverse community of plants, animals, and microbes surrounding trees as the diverse community in #STEM she hoped to see. #biojamcamp
