#Bioerosion can be a key process in the #decomposition of organic matter. In general, bioerosion describes the #breakdown of #solid #substances by #livingorganisms. This can include purely inorganic material, such as stone. In the case of the breakdown of solid components associated with #animaltissue, the term decomposition may also be used. The process often remains insufficiently studied, as understanding such complex processes requires specific investigations within specific contexts. Generalizations are frequently difficult to make.
Nevertheless, D. Kaptan et al. (2026) were able to draw broader #conclusions regarding a phenomenon of great importance to archaeologists: the factors determining the state of #preservation of (human) #bones. Bones may be preserved in remarkably good condition or, conversely, may have survived the passage of time very poorly. According to the researchers, the location and conditions of the body's burial play a crucial role in this regard. By analyzing museum specimens of varying ages and origins, they determined that bones #buried inside #buildings, characterized by high #microbialdiversity within their #microbiome, exhibited better preservation. A comparison of samples from buildings versus those from conventional #cemeteries revealed additionally differences in the #bacterial #speciescomposition involved; findings that were derived from #metagenomic #analyses. Consequently, #Streptomyces #bacteria appear to play a significant role in the accelerated decomposition of bones following #soilburial.

What do these 'holes' indicate, considering they are located on a cliff overlooking the sea? They suggest that the relative sea level was higher in the past! These are #bioerosion traces, meaning they were 'etched' into the rock by organisms like bivalves and sponges.
