#BisonFactFriday Bison have 7-10 times as many hair follicles /sq. in. than cattle. Their thick shaggy coat allows them to have a substantially higher level of cold tolerance than cattle & other ungulates. Their coat is so dense that moisture doesn't saturate down to their skin.

#BisonFactFriday October signifies the start of roundup season for bison ranchers. We wish our fellow bison ranchers a safe & smooth roundup. Bison are low maintenance and hardy animals, but annual roundups are needed to compete tasks & inspection of the overall heard health.

#BisonFactFriday - Many discuss how tall and how much bison weigh weigh, few mention how long they are. Adult bison bulls are about 11 feet in length while adult bison cows are about 7 feet in length. #JGBison #DoItForBison #BeLikeBison

#BisonFactFriday During the rut, bison emotions run high. Bulls are on the hunt for females to breed with & concerned with establishing dominance over other males. Cows are concrrned with protecting their calves from accidental interactions with bulls & keeping them safe.

#BisonFactFriday Along with having split hooves, bison also have dewclaws that can aid them in traction while in deep snow or mud. They have two dewclaws per leg, each located posterior to their hooves. In this picture you can just make out the dewclaws of the outstretched legs.

#BisonFactFriday - A bison will wallow for many reasons. During the hot summer months a dirt bath helps to keep them cool and keeps insects from biting them. During the rut (breeding season) bulls will wallow to show their dominance to other bulls and potential breeding mates.

#BisonFactFriday The ears of a bison are located slightly below & behind their horns, but are sometimes hard to see because of the hair on their head. Their ears move quite a lot and bison will turn their ears in the direction their attention is. #BeLikeBison #DoItForTheBison

Remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you should never pick your friends' nose. A bison's tongue is very rough & dexterous. They will wrap their tongue around grass & rip it when the graze. They even clean their noses out with it! #BisonFactFriday
