#RDC 🇨🇩 | #BlockFarming : Maize harvest in the Plaine de la Ruzizi and in Walungu
In South Kivu, despite persistent security challenges in eastern DRC, small-scale farmers have begun harvesting maize at Ferme Malago, located in the Plaine de la Ruzizi, as well as in Walungu.
This harvest marks a concrete result for over 400 producers involved in the “Block Farming” model in this region of the DRC.
Principally, this model advocates inclusive agribusiness where small producers, large concessionaires and technical institutions work in synergy along the agricultural value chain to achieve convincing results that can sustainably strengthen food security in the region.

#BLOCKFARMING: Launch of the biofortified maize harvest in Muchibwe/South Kivu
The harvest of biofortified maize has begun on the Muchibwe peninsula, in the Kalehe territory, through AALI's block farming initiative, in collaboration with ENABLE DRC.
This initiative targets at least 300 local farmers, and contributes to strengthening food security through the use of improved seeds, such as the "SAM 4 VitA" variety. This variety is rich in vitamin A, and adapted to meet the nutritional needs of local communities affected by displacement and insecurity.
To promote this production, a processing plant will be used in Minova by ENABLE DRC to stimulate agribusiness, local consumption and the rural economy.

#BLOCKFARMING: Currently expanding into three zones in eastern DRC!
With a giant leap forward, Block Farming, an inclusive agribusiness model, is attracting more interest from the #privatesector in #SouthKivu province. After Minova and Walungu, we are now implementing the model with a new partner: “Ferme @MarcMalago.
With this partner, we will support over 400 identified small-scaleproducers, empowering them in best agribusiness practices and facilitating their access to land, high-performance agricultural technologies, and the market.
The aim is to help them access better production opportunities, thus strengthening #foodsecurity in the area.
#BLOCKFARMING: Fall armyworm control in South Kivu
The #armyworm, an invasive pest, represents a serious threat to agricultural crops in the DRC, including maize. It can rapidly destroy hectares of vital crops.
With our partner @Enablerdc, we are supporting over 300 small-scale producers in #Minova as part of the #BlockFarming model of inclusive agribusiness for corn production. We train them modern, effective methods of controlling this pest.
We strengthen these producers' ability to manage the spread of armyworm by providing continuing practical training and crop growth evaluation. They learn how to choose and apply the appropriate pesticides, adhere to environmental and safety regulations, and utilize motorized spraying equipment efficiently. This protects their crops while also ensuring long-term agricultural output.

The "block farming" model, launched in Minova with @Enablerdc, is now being implemented in South Kivu's Walungu territory with #KakonoFarm. The initiative aims to provide small producers with access to land, quality agricultural inputs, and modern technical knowledge while ensuring their output market through concessionnaires. AALI and Kakono Farm plan to support up to 300 small-scale producers in improving their ability to do agribusiness.
