These are runner beans (or ayocote beans; Phaseolus coccineus) and are going parallel to the blue limas part of my #BlueBeanProject.
I'll find out later this summer if the tepary beans (P. acutifolius) patch has a hybrid.
This is part of my #BlueBeanProject. I'm trying to make blue versions of other species using the knowledge gained from making a blue common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris).
Here's my runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus). I planted them inside before the weather was warm enough, so they'd get a head start, as they need a long season.
Hopefully at least one is the hybrid I need for my #BlueBeanProject.

I'm getting ready to pack my bean varieties into envelopes for sale on a small web shop (to be revealed soon!).
Here are two of my blue varieties. I have enough of the 1st to make available, but the 2nd will have to wait. #BlueBeanProject

These are the last seeds collected from my 2 hybrid bean vines. They're a cross between one of my blue lines (Phaseolus vulgaris) and a runner bean (P. coccineus).
They ended up with different sets of chromosomes from each parent. Next year will be interesting.

These seeds will eventually darken to a blue-black shade. They're from a separate line than my main blue seeded varieties.

I've decided to call my blue colored pole beans... "Blue Genes".
The bush bean with the same shade... "Blue Gene Shorts".
#BlueBeanProject
These beans are unrelated to the main lines of blue colored beans that I've been working with for the last few years.
They're a bit brighter and the seeds are rounder. It'll be a few years before I know if the color is temperature sensitive or not.

My runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus) are blooming well.
1st frosts are expected in 3 weeks. There may be -just- enough time.
These are purple & yellow seeded selections. I'm hoping they will cross and help me get to a blue seeded version of this species too.

I grew a couple tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) varieties this year. I chose these varieties because I think their genetics might let me get to a blue version in a few years. Next year I'll know if any hybrids turned up.

I'm still collecting the data from my pole bean population, but already the distribution of seed weights is distinctly narrower. #BlueBeanProject

One of my Phaseolus vulgaris x P. coccineus hybrid beans is going a little extra.
I'd already gotten a good number of seeds from this plant, but it looks like it might be able to mature a second flush.

The first bean from my blue x Wit-rood boontje F2 population shows a nice pale blue color.
#BlueBeanProject

Seeds from my two Phaseolus vulgaris x P. coccineus hybrid vines. The smaller seeded plant has matured many pods full of seeds. The larger seeded plant has matured two seeds so far.

Most of the seed saved from last year were from one plant, which was carrying a recessive allele for tan seeds.
The blue color seems to be partially impacted by temperature, but there are recessive alleles too, making it hard to be sure what's going on.

Seriously, this is the sort of color intensity I expect to see in high bred sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) or in runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus).
These are in my #BlueBeanProject bush beans (P. vulgaris).
Some of the oldest blue beans I have, even from 2018, still hold their color well. They have very little of the proanthocyanidins that oxidize brown over time in many/most beans.
The other blue varieties I've seen since then all turn brown in storage.

These are two F3 selections from a cross a few years back that led to interesting color.
At left has dark blue-black seeds with tan speckles. At right has brighter blue seeds.
These are unrelated to my main blue seeded lines and have a different seed shape. #BlueBeanProject

My main blue seeded bean lines have consistently had pink flowers.
Today I found a white-flowered vine on the trellis. At first I thought there were yellow flowers too, but then I realized the white flowers shift to yellow as they age.

Not being associated with an academic institution, I wasn't sure they would fill my seed request. I did give them a description of my #BlueBeanProject and how I thought these seeds would help, as well as how I "publish" publicly here about it, & they sent me some seeds.
