Blue Tea - herbal infusion made from butterfly pea flowers of the Clitoria ternatea plant Butterfly pea flower infusion has a distinct blue color because of which, one of the main uses is preparation of blue dyes and as natural food coloring. It is caffeine free. There is currently no evidence or studies to show that consumption of blue tea has additional benefits for human health. It is an Instagrammable exotic drink and nothing more at the moment. Butterfly pea flower extract is approved for safe use as an additive coloring in drinks and beverages. The extracts are very safe that the US-FDA and Code of Federal Regulations has exempt the extract from certification as color additive in foods. https://t.co/e9j5uTuio4 Butterfly pea flower extracts contain anthocyanins that are useful as "freshness indicators" in packaged food. https://t.co/RbuaM1y6ba This is the exact opposite of green tea extracts - which are one of the commonest causes for severe liver injury, liver failure and death/liver transplantation when used as as single agents or as part of herbal and dietary supplements (HDS). https://t.co/14X0ET3A6I Green tea extracts based food items or supplements are very poorly regulated that no one actually labels content of the plant-toxin (called epigallocatechin-3-gallate or EGCG) which is responsible for liver damage in such products. Since the consumption of EGCG exceeding 800 milligrams per day increase the likelihood of liver damage when taken as a food supplement, the European Union has advised manufacturers to limit the amount of EGCG in foods/supplements based on this data. https://t.co/jPxawQn1Eo Traditionally prepared gree tea drinks are safe for use. Because the usual 2-3 cups a day does not lead to an increased consumption of EGCG from these type of home-made drinks. So you may go ahead and enjoy your 2-3 cups of green tea - but do not over consume it, and do not consume concentrated infusions on a daily basis. https://t.co/oQE6O84C6a However, some dietary supplements contain very high concentrations of green tea-based EGCG and should be avoided at all costs. Green tea extracts are VERY COMMONLY found in skin/hair/nail health supplements found over the counter and prescribed by Dermatologists. Check your supplements now and avoid them or bin them now.
