Who is that? Great horned owls. While spring feels far away, owls start nesting super early. By this time of year they are already sitting on eggs. They don’t make nests of their own but instead reuse nests from other birds or may even use man-made structures. #BoCoParks

Snapping turtles spend winter under the ice in a state of brumation. Metabolism slows way down. Lungs don’t work on the lake bottoms, but they can use cloacal respiration (exchange of gases through the cloaca). That’s right, folks, they can breathe through their butts! #BoCoParks
Muskrats stay active year-round and unlike the beaver they do not cache food for the winter. Muskrats utilize heterothermia so that their tails and feet have a much lower temperature than their main body (and thereby organs) in order to conserve energy. #BoCoParks
What a grin! Moose snack on twigs in the winter. These are less nutritious than their summer food, so it takes a bunch of them to keep a moose grinning in lower temps. To prep for winter moose will gain 25 percent of their body weight! They lose weight all winter long. #BoCoParks
After doubling their weight in the fall, marmots are now taking a winter snooze. Their body temperature drops to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit and their pulse is about 5 beats per minute. They will appear once again come March or April — when the grass greens up. #BoCoParks
Icicles form with little bumps about 1cm apart. Scientists aren’t sure what makes these bumps, but know it is linked with impurities in the water. Distilled water can form bump-less icicles. The more impurities, the bigger the bumps. #BoCoParks

Voles stay active in winter. Under the snow, they tunnel around in search of food. While solitary in summer months, they form communal nests in the winter. They take turns looking for food so that there are always some voles back in the nest keeping the place warm. #BoCoParks

Bushy tailed woodrats (packrats) do not hibernate. They do build impressive nests! They urinate on their belongings to mark them as theirs. The urine can crystalize to cement the nest together. Under the right conditions these nests can last thousands of years. #BoCoParks
Rather than hibernation, ectotherms like this turtle enter a state known as brumation. Their metabolism slows down by 99% & they hang out on the bottom of lakes. If temperatures rise, they may move around a bit unlike mammals in hibernation. #BoCoParks

Cottontail rabbits do not hibernate. You can find them active year-round. Most cottontails only survive about a year in the wild and make up for their short life spans by producing up to six litters of babies in the warm seasons. #BoCoParks
