Tansy Troy, the author of Ratnakosha, met us first at the Ethos Literary Festival on the 18th of November. Vinita Agrawal invited her to the fest. Later, Tansy emailed me, expressing her interest in visiting Grains (Delhi) and #Bookalign (Gurgaon). Today, Tansy and her daughter dropped by #Grains. We had a good time, savouring Darjeeling second flush. Tansy bought a bunch of books for her Christmas break.

At Bookalign, we nurture our dream to share shelves with independent publishers or small presses. As a publisher, we understand how challenging it is to sustain a presence, primarily when it does not entail vanity publishing. For the uninitiated, we would like to let you know that self-publishing (wherein authors pay to get their books published) is otherwise known as vanity publishing. As a publisher, we also realize the necessity of distribution, especially in bookstores. Generally, the bookshops rely on distributors to procure books. They don't usually get the books directly from the publishers. The distributor and the bookshop enjoy a stipulated credit period (3-6 months), and as the term ends, the unsold books are returned to the publisher. No one knows (or wants to know) what happens to the unsold titles. Sometimes, returned books are found damaged or soiled. First, giving out books without payment and then waiting for the price after the tenure of the credit period. Sometimes, publishers have to wait for a long time for the cost. And in rare instances, the money arrives prompt.
All small publishing concerns undergo the same procedure (hazards, if we may say so) if they want to distribute their books through the proper channels. First, investing money for producing the books and then waiting to realize the proceeds. It's time-consuming and tiring, and not all small presses are sufficiently equipped to face these challenges.
So, when we conceived Bookalign, we made a questionnaire for ourselves:
1. Shall we share space with fellow small presses?
2. What discount shall we ask them to offer?
3. Shall we follow the conventional protocol of Sales or Return?
4. What will be the tenure of credit?
Answer to Q 1: We are privileged for sure; not many small publishers have a store of their own. And we must honor this advantage. We should respect the small presses, the same respect we seek from other stores.
Answers to the following questions: If publishers can invest money in the books they produce, why can't Bookalign spend money on procuring them? Barring a few titles, most small houses (including Hawakal) publish books penned by unknown or not-so-known authors. Bookalign won't look for a distributor to fetch books for them. Bookalign will pay upfront for a fine selection of books, which will make us, the owners, accountable for our decision and focused on promoting (and eventually selling) the books we buy. Bookalign or Hawakal is privileged. True. Only a handful of booksellers are publishers themselves. So, as we enjoy an eclectic range of books we have published for the past 15 years or would publish in the future, Bookalign will share 30-35% of store space with other publishers. It should be fine if honest intentions prevail, and we really want to support our colleagues by buying their books with advance full payment and at a discount they are comfortable with.
Curating books for Bookalign has been fun and rewarding as well.

Most recently, Dhauli Books gave a bunch of books: Birds of Water, A Brief History of Silence, Our Many Longings, Literature across Mediums, Sordid, Mengoubi, and The Biography of Anger.
So, when you plan your visit to the Hawakal bookshop, remember to check out the new arrivals.
