Yes, Lucara’s attraction & subsequent investment in Botswana was made possible by the BDP-led Government. While the government of Botswana does not own equity in Lucara, it still benefits significantly from the company’s operations through substantial taxes, royalties (about U$D25.1 million last year) and other financial contributions that Lucara pays to the state as part of its mining activities/operations within the country. Botswana receives a 10% royalty on the sale of all their diamonds, including this new discovery when it is sold. These contributions are critical to the country’s national budget & development projects. Lucara is also a major employer in Botswana, providing high-quality jobs to hundreds of Batswana and indirectly supports thousands of jobs through its procurement of goods & services from local businesses (value-chain benefits). To claim that Botswana does not benefit anything from of these diamonds is false! But then again, it is what you are selling in the Opposition, a false narrative!
